Commercial Description:
The famous Bear Gates guarding the approach to Traquair House, near Pebbles, have been closed since 1745 - when the last person to pass through them was Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Now, 250 years later, the ancient Traquair Brew House celebrates the Jacobite cause by producing this potent spiced ale to a traditional fine recipe. Sip slowly and remember the old toast to the "King O'er the Water."

Bottled. Pours clear dark brown with beige bubbles and minimal head / lacing. Aroma of cinnamon and toffee, with some raisin, maple wood and plum. A slight metallic taint on the aroma keeps it from being above-average. Coriander is mostly apparent in the flavor, mixed in with peppery roasted malts, more toffee and a touch of ginger. Like a big spicy Scottish ale thats been toned down a notch. Fairly thin mouth feel, but it makes for easy drinking if you’re in the mood for this style of beer. Pretty good.

The best beer brewed with coriander that I have ever tried. I really wish it was cheaper though. It’s spiced, but the spice is not the focus at all. The beer is the focus.

Pours dark burgundy with a fully receding tan head. Aroma of raisins, plums, toffee, rum. Tastes of raisin, dark bread, coriander, pepper, delicate phenols, and dark fruits. Mouthfeel is full bodied with lush carbonation. Very elegant and delicious beer.

Pours dark brown with reddish highlights and a short tan head that quickly turns into a ring of bubbles. Prunes, sugar, molasses, and coriander in the nose. Earthy malt with the same dark fruits, spice, and caramel dominate the taste. Hints of butterscotch, pepper, cinnamon, and herbs. Very different beer, almost like an aperitif.

pours dark chocolate with a light tan head. aroma is sweet, spicy, malty. the flavor isthick and malty, with pepery spices floating around. the palate is thick and yeasty. teh spice does not detract from the scottish ale-ness. this is not a favorite style of mine.

Bottle from Magnum, swindon, UK. Now this is interesting. the aroma made me go "oh...?" Coriander seed is added im sure of that and maybe nutmeg but not sure. the spice sits on top of the huge earthy, musty damp smell. brown sugar and alcohol also. quite belgian. tight, slightly sweet flavour lingers with the spice.

330ml botlle acquired from Coldbrewky. Pours a hazy brown with tan head. Lazy rings of lace coat my glass. Carbonation is moderate leading to a lively mouthfeel. Nose is dark fruits & sugary candy. Butterscotch lifesavers maybe. Flavors is sweet and sugary. Cinnamon cookie? Also tastes of raisin & dates. At 8% the alcohol is well hidden. An interesting tasty brew.

Poured from a 330ml bottle and served in a shaker. This beer poured a dark brown with a few mahogany highlights and a one-finger thick head of tan foam that settled down to a thin layer that lasted throughout most of the glass. Some nice looking lacing was left behind. The aroma of the beer was made up of stong coriander, dates, raisins, sweet caramel, and brown sugar. Sweet and spicy! The flavor consisted of coriander, a strong, earthy, herbal note, dried fruits, mild citrus, chocolate, caramelized sugar, cinnamon, and a touch of alcohol. The mouthfeel was full-bodied with moderate carbonation. A very interesting beer. Maybe a touch sweet, but not cloying. Really, really tasty!!!
