Commercial Description:
The famous Bear Gates guarding the approach to Traquair House, near Pebbles, have been closed since 1745 - when the last person to pass through them was Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Now, 250 years later, the ancient Traquair Brew House celebrates the Jacobite cause by producing this potent spiced ale to a traditional fine recipe. Sip slowly and remember the old toast to the "King O'er the Water."

11.2 oz bottle pours a dark mahogany with a small khaki head. Aroma of smoky peat, toffee, and coriander. Medium body supports earthy flavors, some anise, smoke, and dark fruits. Lots of spicy and earthy hop bitteress. Very interesting.

12 oz bottle, via magic_dave6. Pours a clear mahogany brown body with a small fizzy beige head that faded quickly to a thin ring. The nose is sweet and fruity with lots of yeast derived esters. Some spices, vanilla, light alcohol, and chocolate notes. Very vinous overall. The flavor has a nice balance between the sweet malt and the spicing, keeping it from being too cloying. Lots of banana and dark fruit on the finish before the lingering herbal notes come on. Mouthfeel is full bodied and slightly thick, but not syrupy. Moderately fine fizzy carbonation, and quite mouthcoating. Overall, this is always a nice beer, but I wish that it weren’t filtered so heavily.

12 oz. bottle poured into my trusty stein- poured transparent slightly hazy very dark red brown (to the point where it was almost black), tiny white whisps floating around for a head, aroma of toffee, roasted malts, and earthy spices. Hits the mouth with a well defined medium body, that malt along with the coriander are more pronounced, finish of darkened molasses. Makes the mouth sticky after a few sips. Good.

Very dark pour with a small head. Flavor is complex and changing. Spices, fruits, malts, sweets, and earth tones all come forth. Could be a little smoother.

Bottle. Pours a dark red that borders on black with a tiny head. The aroma is mostly spices, some dark fruits and old dusty tomes (David Hume perhaps). The taste is somewhat smooth but stands out as original; coriander, raisins, some smoke off a peat burning fire, malts and some alcohol. Nice. Sort of hard to judge due to complexity. Overall, just great.

Pours a dark brown with a mahogany tint and a small bubbly beige head. Aroma of tea, coriander, dark fruit and smoked meat. Taste of dark fruit soaked in coriander with hints of smoked beef jerky and tea. Quite an interesting brew.

This ia a wonderful beer. It’s delightfully complex. This beer is by far one of the most professionally done brews around.
