Commercial Description:
The famous Bear Gates guarding the approach to Traquair House, near Pebbles, have been closed since 1745 - when the last person to pass through them was Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Now, 250 years later, the ancient Traquair Brew House celebrates the Jacobite cause by producing this potent spiced ale to a traditional fine recipe. Sip slowly and remember the old toast to the "King O'er the Water."

Unlike any ale from Scotland that I have ever tried. Scotish ales tend to have a slight bitterness under the flavor...but this ale is very unique. Very crisp aroma....sort of a fresh spiciness (slighty floral, or maybe earthy is a better term) with tones of corriander, malt and another spice that is very similar to Grains of Paradise. The flavor is just as complex....a plethora of spices, particularly corriander (of course, since they brew with it!) as well as allspice, maybe a hint of something like Grains of Paradise. Also a nice malty backbone, not too roasted, but not too sweet...it complements the spiciness very well. A very unique beer that is worth at least one try.

Pours a murcky medium brown with a thin layer of foam. Aroma of spices, coriander, and caramel. Complex flavor, alcohol is hidden fairly well.

Bottle (purchased at the brasserie): Clear, deep amber colored, smaller tanned foamy head, sweet dark and toasted malt in the nose, underpinned by coriander; solid sweetish flavour, quite full bodied, soft creamy MF; strong malty finish with heavy influences of coriander. Good, spicy and well balanced brew..........

330 ml bottle. Very dark reddish body with a small beige head. Aroma is very complex, sweet malt, liquorices, spices and raw alcohol. Flavor is also complex, malt, liquorices, caramel, vanilla and spices. Not very different to a trappist beer.

Pours very very dark, opaque, nearly black. Almost no head in this bottle, and very little carbonation. Very faint aroma of maple syrup. Marvelous, rich flavor which is very delicious yet refined.
