Commercial Description:
The famous Bear Gates guarding the approach to Traquair House, near Pebbles, have been closed since 1745 - when the last person to pass through them was Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Now, 250 years later, the ancient Traquair Brew House celebrates the Jacobite cause by producing this potent spiced ale to a traditional fine recipe. Sip slowly and remember the old toast to the "King O'er the Water."

Pours deep mahogany brown, almost black, but with some very nice red tones. Head is about 1/2 inch of very dense tan bubbles. Aroma is dark roasted malt with hints of chocolate, backed by some coriander, and hints of licorice. Mouthfeel is rich and oily. Flavor is big malty, with more licorice and a subtle coriander. Tail is all roast malt and licorice. Really nice spiced Wee Heavy.

9 / 4 / 9 / 5 / 19 Dark brown pour, not a lot of bubbles, medium tan creamy head. Very sweet aroma of malt, savory smoke, flowers, pepper and coriander. Completely unique flavor. Delicious licorice/toasted malt flavors with lots of spice on top. Not annoyingly spiced like a lot of winter ales, but rather in perfect combination with the malts. Cinnamon and brown sugar in there too. Also gives the impression of wood aging, although I dont know if it is? Not a sipping beer for me... gulping this down...very drinkable the palate is full bodied but light drinking...perfect [Rerate 9/30/08] 9 / 4 / 9 / 4 / 18 Pours a thin but dark and murky brown/black with a very small head. Aroma is very sweet fruity and floral with lots of licorice. First taste is straight black licorice, followed by extra-dry woody malt, finishing with bitter and spicy coriander/licorice. Some pepper and a bit vinous, a bit of soy and what seems like black malt. Smooth lightly carbonation medium body, slightly creamy but very flat in the mouth. Definitely one of the most unique beers in the world!

I’m wondering if I got a bad bottle of this, because there is NO way this beer can be rated this high. Aroma was huge and delicious. Sour raisins in a potent flower garden is the best way to describe this. Pour was a dirty dark brown with a thin off white ring for a head. The taste was very complex but weak. No carbonation. Raisin, strong spiciness and almost a scotch aftertaste. The flavor is gone as soon as you swallow. No alcohol detectable while cold, but the burn comes out as it warms. Interesting.

330 ml bottle. Pours a dark brown with very thin white head which disappeared except for around the edge. The remaining head produced some lacing. The aroma was sweet malt with a hint of alcohol. Flavor was sweet malt, spices, raisins and a little alcohol. Alcohol was not detrimental to the flavor or mouthfeel. Mouthfeel was medium and a little sticky. Pleasant drink. Very nice malty brew.

Almost black with a fast disappearing head. Very peculiar nose, a mix of flowery notes and mild spices gives this beer a really original bouquet, mingling with a good mix of roast and caramel malts. It’s little more than watery, so it’s very drinkable.
