Commercial Description:
The famous Bear Gates guarding the approach to Traquair House, near Pebbles, have been closed since 1745 - when the last person to pass through them was Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Now, 250 years later, the ancient Traquair Brew House celebrates the Jacobite cause by producing this potent spiced ale to a traditional fine recipe. Sip slowly and remember the old toast to the "King O'er the Water."

A delicious ale, but not at all what I expected. Far sweeter and delicate than most Scottish beers I’ve had. Pours with a nice, but quickly diminishing head, not much lace. Strongly spicy aroma, reminds me of (dare I say) pizza. Flavors of liquorice, faint chocolate, honey and lots of spices, the coriander is very strong. Not much alcohol flavor. Mouthfeel is delicate and very pleasant, recommended.

10/24/07 From the bottle. Aroma is sweet and perfumy, with a complex mix of honey, malt, ginger and coriander. Excellent. Flavor is very malty, with a roast/toast character forward, with a nice coriander blend, low bittering, and a slightly peaty finish. Mouthfeel is medium/high bodied with a medium carb feel. Overall, a very cool beer that quite easy drinking for being so rich, with a great blending of flavors.

(Rating #1330)

26/10 0.33 l bottle at Tolkiens House...served with a trappist glass, but fine... Poured dark brown body with medium brownish head. Wonderful aroma with caramel, chocolate, forest fruits, surely some other things...yeap this is a real 10. Flavor doesn’t stand a lot besides, too, fantastic, quite complex as well with more or less same things as in aroma, specially chocolate is felt. Full bodied, but is goes down pretty smoothly. Alcohol is felt but not much. Great finish, with some pleasant coffee dominating this time. Interesting. Really, an exquisite beer, great surprise and surely I’ll have it again as soon I get the chance!

Bottle, Pint glass, Aroma is pure malty goodness, pours a nice deep mahgony red color, with a thin brown head. Rich chocolate and mild coffee roasts dominate the palate. Liqorice, sweet malts that finish dry. Corriander is slight and well desirved. Palate is just a touch lighter than I expected. Good, very good, A touch of hops but nothing massive, just delicious malts, that very from strong roast but only in light amounts, to raisins, plums, cherries, in greater volumes. A bit of old world breadiness. Quite nice.

Nice clear blood red ale with an alright head. It has a nice clean and light fragrance, but the beer.......not so much. The ear wax-like bitterness just hits so fast and dies so slow it really don’t give you time to explore the other flavors. To bad, I think this could have been a great beer.

Bottle. Semi clear dark brown in colour with a medium sized tan head. Malty and a bit sweet with notes of ryebread, dried berries, chocolate and spices. Very well balanced.
