Commercial Description:
The famous Bear Gates guarding the approach to Traquair House, near Pebbles, have been closed since 1745 - when the last person to pass through them was Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Now, 250 years later, the ancient Traquair Brew House celebrates the Jacobite cause by producing this potent spiced ale to a traditional fine recipe. Sip slowly and remember the old toast to the "King O'er the Water."

Pours a dark brown with a small, light brown head. You really can smell that big coriander spice mixed in with syrupy malts and molasses. The taste is very spicy, very malty, with a little kick to the finish. The alcohol comes through in the end and leaves a little heat on the palate. The malts leave a slight bitterness in the finish, but relatively smooth going down. Quite a different beer. Not sure I liked it a whole lot, but certainly didnt dislike it.

Medium beige head. Deep dark red body. Sugary spicy peppery licorice aroma with chocolatey notes. Slightly earthy and stale. Deep sweet milky licorice and chocolate taste with toffeeish notes. Mild, smooth, and clean mouthfeel. No aftertaste; just fades out. Some alcohol heat, but no alcohol taste. Lingering papery caramelly taste. Excellent, a really good beer. (0.33l bottle from gr0ve.)

Aromas dominated by caramel, almost candy like, with a coffee, roasty and herbs touch. Pours black, but is rather clear and sparkling. The head is minimal ans short lived. Looks like cola... The flavor is definitively sweet, maby a bit too sweet, but a bitter aftertaste counterbalance it in the end. It has a full body, with a very creamy texture, almost aerial like whipping cream, oily. The carbonation is fizzy with a long finish. The flavor is intense, which is good, however a few things counterbalances it so it is not as easy to drink as I expected. It’s like a very ’’chic’’ piece of clothing that you can’t wear without an occasion.

33 cl bottle via trade with dankman38 - Pours a hazy brown color with a thin light tan head that faded quickly. Aroma is full of dark esters. Flavor is toasted malt and esters. Fruit flavors linger on the palate. Medium body. A good beer. Thanks Mike.
