Commercial Description:
The famous Bear Gates guarding the approach to Traquair House, near Pebbles, have been closed since 1745 - when the last person to pass through them was Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Now, 250 years later, the ancient Traquair Brew House celebrates the Jacobite cause by producing this potent spiced ale to a traditional fine recipe. Sip slowly and remember the old toast to the "King O'er the Water."

Nearly opaque dark brown with ruby highlights. Medium and lasting, deliciously creamy tan noggin on this one. Nose is spicy coriander and raisins in chocolate sauce. Flavor is similar, with less chocolate than raisin and coriander. Barely noticeable alcohol, and a delicate touch of bittering grassy herbs on the end. Palate is medium-bodied, smooth and just a little more watery than expected. Excellent dessert beer.

Pours dark brown/black with almost no head. Malty, and the coriander spice is featured and well integrated into the brew. Lemony-citrus hints combine with rounded fruity notes, lightly toasted malts and chocolate to combine for a very interesting and complex brew, worth trying.

330ml bottle. Pint glass. Mahogany with a tan head. Aroma of sweet malt and fruit especially blueberry. Flavor had notes of dark fruit and bourbon and a hint of smoke. Mouthfeel was a bit more thin than I expected. Just a touch of bitterness.

Poured a clear dark brown-amber with a thin loose head. Spice and earth in the aroma with some malt characteristics. Deep flavor profile with roasted malt, spice, earth, and herbal notes. Lighter in the mouth but still huge and complex and a bit unwieldy which leaves the impression of imbalance. The alcohol is well-masked, however. Overall, quite an interesting beer but not for casual drinking.

Poured clear amber with weak off white head. The aroma just jumps out of the glass when poured. Smells like a load of coriander but it isn’t too bright. That aroma seems to mix with a pronounced raisin note as well as lesser amounts of dark chocolate and something vaguely smoky. Interesting flavor with the smooth coriander, a bag full of raisins, dried plums, dark chocolate and hints of smoke. Certainly an interesting combination.
