Commercial Description:
The famous Bear Gates guarding the approach to Traquair House, near Pebbles, have been closed since 1745 - when the last person to pass through them was Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Now, 250 years later, the ancient Traquair Brew House celebrates the Jacobite cause by producing this potent spiced ale to a traditional fine recipe. Sip slowly and remember the old toast to the "King O'er the Water."

33 cL bottle from CapFlu. Pours muddy, lightly particulate mahagony with spare off-white rocky head, moslty diminishing. Aroma is heavy malt (caramel, nutty, meal), light hops (herbs), average yeast (dough) with notes of toffee, honey, pear and spices. Medium bodied, sticky texture, average carbonation and a metallic finish. Moderate sweetness, light acidity and bitterness; hearbal roasted caramel flavor.

Bottle. Sweet nose bursts with chocolate and spice, malt, toffee, and a little funk. Coriander and light floral notes. Dark dark ruby body with no head but a strange counterclockwise swirling vortex effect. Taste is sweet and lightly smoked with heavy but well-blended coriander. Very floral, led by the coriander (floriander?). Touch of flat but really well made root beer. Medium-full velvety body. Spice paradise? A complex, delicious sipper.

11.2oz bottle. Pours a clear dark brown with amber highlights with a small short lived light tan head that leaves minimal lacing. Aroma of coriander and sweet caramel malt with a hint of toasted malt. Taste is the same leaning towards the sweet malt with a dry spicy finish. Very different but very good.

Pours a dark, murky brown with no head save for a thin, filmy thing and a touch of white lacing around the edge. Aroma of coriander over sweet candied sugar and lightly toasted malt. Maybe a hint of raisin. Flavor is much the same, very spicy and darkly sweet. Subtle bittersweet finish.Very nice. Refreshing and different.

Best before June 2009. Aroma of dark fruits with spice. Hazy pruney color with a passing head that laced a bit in its travels. Starts with dark malt and plumminess, passing on to fairly spicey notes (coriander plus something else?). The mouthfeel is substantial. There seems to be some hop to go along with the malt and spice, but it all works simultaneously. The aftertaste is reminiscent of that of old fashioned Guinness, but not roasted/burnt enough to overcome the other flavors. Really great ale.

Bottle. Fruity malty nose with no head. The taste was malty and smooth with apricot and various spices coming thru . Alcohol well hidden. Interesting beer.
