Commercial Description:
The famous Bear Gates guarding the approach to Traquair House, near Pebbles, have been closed since 1745 - when the last person to pass through them was Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Now, 250 years later, the ancient Traquair Brew House celebrates the Jacobite cause by producing this potent spiced ale to a traditional fine recipe. Sip slowly and remember the old toast to the "King O'er the Water."

(bottle - 11.2 oz) Dark ruby red color without any head to speak of. Aroma is very complex. Lots of sweetness, some cherries possibly mixed with brown sugar, some coriander, honey, and even some chocolate. Flavor is sweet at the beginning with a middle of honey, earth notes, mixed with some orange zest, and some tangy dark fruits. Loaded with different flavors but they don’t mix all that well. Not very fizzy.

Loving this ale - beautiful but subdued in every respect. It has all the goods but makes you work in order for them to truly appear; this makes it all the more pleasing. A deep red-brown with basically no head; the aroma emanating from this brew is out-of-this-world: caramel, floral pollen, brown sugar, bitter orange peel, wildflower honey. In the mouth some of these aromas fade out considerably, leaving a mild taste dominated by sweetness through brown sugar, oranges, flowers. Little to no bitterness but a strange sweet finish that I haven’t ever experienced before. The ale is smooth on the tongue but seemed to me a little bit flat; not exactly syrupy but not as put-together on the tongue as I would’ve hoped. Overall a tremendous ale.

BottleABSOLUTELY gorgeous ale. Dark, clean red, near black, very creamy tan/white head. Smells fantastic, as is well known. Spices like orange peel --mostly coriander, strong coriander, which is great. This is the smoothest palated ale I’ve ever drank...very sweet, as it leaves a tangy, bitterness of sorts on the tongue when finished. Really, of all the expensive bottles I’ve sampled and experimented with, this one YOU HAVE TO TRY.

The coriander and malt provide a great flavor and palate sensation. The oak character is obvious, but balanced nicely by the roundness of the herbal infusion.

Pours a loamy red. Herbal mint aroma. Many tiny white bubbles around rim of glass. Sweet brown malt flavour with just a hint of alcohol. A bare hint, really, quite impressive for eight percent. It is pretty sweet though.

Near black colored, slight red hints. Medium sized beige head. Chocolate, nuts, mild vinous tones, even some oak in aroma. Medium to full bodied. Flavor is strongly sweet with vinous touch and berries, mild alcohol and some tangy biting sourness there also. Too sweet flavored.

Bottle. Incredible delicious aroma of dried fruit, alcohol, caramel with hints of coffee. The flavor is dominated by caramel and butter leading to a flowery finish and a short raisiny aftertaste with hints of bitterness. Very dark brown with shades of read and a small café au lait colored head. Perfect Co2 for the style and beautifully balanced flavor. The only thing I think detracts from this brew is that it is a but a bit thin in the mouth like it was filtered. Excellent!

Bottle; nose of spices, plums, caramel, and sweetness; hazy brown with a ring of beige bubbles encircling the glass; flavor has corriander, caramel, molasses, and sweet fruitiness in a medium body with a tiny alcohol finish.
