Commercial Description:
The famous Bear Gates guarding the approach to Traquair House, near Pebbles, have been closed since 1745 - when the last person to pass through them was Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Now, 250 years later, the ancient Traquair Brew House celebrates the Jacobite cause by producing this potent spiced ale to a traditional fine recipe. Sip slowly and remember the old toast to the "King O'er the Water."

Near black colored, slight red hints. Medium sized beige head. Chocolate, nuts, mild vinous tones, even some oak in aroma. Medium to full bodied. Flavor is strongly sweet with vinous touch and berries, mild alcohol and some tangy biting sourness there also. Too sweet flavored.

Bottle. Incredible delicious aroma of dried fruit, alcohol, caramel with hints of coffee. The flavor is dominated by caramel and butter leading to a flowery finish and a short raisiny aftertaste with hints of bitterness. Very dark brown with shades of read and a small café au lait colored head. Perfect Co2 for the style and beautifully balanced flavor. The only thing I think detracts from this brew is that it is a but a bit thin in the mouth like it was filtered. Excellent!

Bottle; nose of spices, plums, caramel, and sweetness; hazy brown with a ring of beige bubbles encircling the glass; flavor has corriander, caramel, molasses, and sweet fruitiness in a medium body with a tiny alcohol finish.

Brown with small head. Aroma is strange perfumy spice, sweet fruit, and sugar. Flavor is the same with plum and spice. Corriander is apparent. Meduim/light palate.

sampled with mate: aroma is spicy with lots of dark roasted malt character, with carmel and malasses, and some dark dried fruits. Nice spicey yeast as well kind of like a belgian ale.

Huge aroma. Deep malty, spicy and ’deep’ flowery. The colour is dark brown and the creamy head is lasting all the way through. The taste is slight burned with an initial caramel note. Slight taste of cloves, coriander and a lot of spices, that I just can’t pinpoint. It’s complex and extremely well balanced and has a heveanly ’feel good’ mellowness. The palate is just perfect. Body is just big enough and the carbonation couldn’t be better for this style. It’s a real treat, and there’s so many things going on in this beer that it would take pages just to narrow it down. Really amazing!!!!

Bottle. Pours a very dark ruby-brown, with a thin tan head that disappears quickly. Nose is malty, coriander, pepper, sweet with a hint of woodsmoke. Mouth is coriander, slightly sweet, peppery, touch of molasses, malty. Smooth, slightly bitter and peppery finish. Very good, disguises alcohol well. Nice rounded ale, slightly lacking in palate, but makes up for it in spice.
