Commercial Description:
The famous Bear Gates guarding the approach to Traquair House, near Pebbles, have been closed since 1745 - when the last person to pass through them was Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Now, 250 years later, the ancient Traquair Brew House celebrates the Jacobite cause by producing this potent spiced ale to a traditional fine recipe. Sip slowly and remember the old toast to the "King O'er the Water."

Bottle. Pours a dark brown color with a minimal off white head that disaapears rather quickly. Aroma of malt, molasses, and coriander. Taste is slightly sweet with a bit of a rotten fruit flavor. Finishes with an unpleasent aftertaste.

Poured a dark brown brew with a small short lived tan head. The aroma was very fruity. Had hints of molasses and raisin/prune. The taste had a lot more of the molasses and prune taste. Definitely a unique beer. The palate was smooth and full. Not as impressed as i expected.

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a small dense head. Aromas of vanilla, oak, cedar, molasses, coriander and a little prune. Fairly malty, heavy mouthfeel with a good amount of pine in taste with a biting aftertaste.

11/10/06: Bottle.
Aroma of licorice and orange pulp. Deep black cherry body. Very tranquil looking. Abundant flavors: molasses, roasted malt, vanilla and coriander. Chewy palate. Wowzers! I believe there are gum drop tones… interesting. Finish is slightly sour with notes of cherry. Alcohol more present as beer warms. Also noted, tongue numbing.

12 OZ bottle via footbalm (thanks eric!). Pours a clear dark brown with a large beige head.Aroma is butterscotch, vanilla, band aid, alcohol.Tastes just like it smells and the bandaid comes through strong in the aftertaste. Tastes like old stale boiled colliflower...Thin body. Crappy beer....maybe it is the coriander that ruins it for me?

Pours a clear red with a tanned head. Smells flowery. Slightly sour and winey.Quite spicy. Well hidden alcohol. Full bodied. Dry, very flowery finish with some residual sugars.

Pours to a dark oily brown, wit hints of red. Had a very thin off-white head that left virtually no lacing. Nice strong aroma of malty dark fruit, with undertones of chocolate and toffee, with hints of spices. Taste was definitely more of the same found in the aroma, though the alcohol was more pronounced as the beer warmed. Finish was an interesting mix of sweet and dry. I really enjoyed this beer, although it actually reminded me somewhat of a barley wine.
