Commercial Description:
The famous Bear Gates guarding the approach to Traquair House, near Pebbles, have been closed since 1745 - when the last person to pass through them was Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Now, 250 years later, the ancient Traquair Brew House celebrates the Jacobite cause by producing this potent spiced ale to a traditional fine recipe. Sip slowly and remember the old toast to the "King O'er the Water."

Weird, wonderful brew, with lots going on here, some of which is difficult to define...so different is this beer. (Note to El_Borracho: THIS beer should be enough to indicate why it makes no sense to "top out" your ratings at 500 (or any number really!)....because every once in a while a strange (and in this case, I mean STRANGE) beer comes along that knocks all your senses for a loop, turns your appreciation for beer on it’s ear, and makes you rethink just what we are really doing by reviewing a constant stream of new and unusual beers. It is, after all, The League of Strange Beer Drinkers, not The League of the Same Beer Daily)

This one, from Scotland, has strange intertwined flavors of smoke, intense spiciness (coriander), roasted caramel and molasses, candi sugar, alcohol, licorice, dried fruits like fig and dates, dark chocolate and cocoa. Great creamy mouthfeel. This is really spectacular! Why’d I wait so long to sample this baby!?!

Pours a deep mahaogany brown with no head. There is some strong alcohol in the aroma, almost like a scotch. There is also hints of medicine, licorice, raisin, spices, and nuts. Wow, this has a very unique, delicous taste. It’s hard to pinpoint the very complex flavors. There is a wonderful spicy tartness to this beer. There are hints of grapes and earthy tones, as well as blueberries and pine and even some cocoa. The palate is great - creamy and smooth with a bitter spiciness in the finish. Overall this is a fantastic spiced beer with an excellent complex taste.

Low carbonation and an aroma of alcohol and spices. Looks like very strong tea in the glass and has an almost pleasant medicine taste (you know the kind where you look forward to the next dose). A good mouth feel with a taste to complex for my inexperienced palate to seperate. I will try it again just to be sure it’s not better than I thought it was.

Bottle. Off-white creamy low but lasting head. Clear dark red body. Aroma of alcohol and berries. Complex flavor with a good balance between the high alcohol percentage and grapefruit and berries tastes.

This brew pours like a cola, medium translucent brown and somewhat fizzy with a big but short-lived tannish head. The aroma is clean, earthy, with hints of both fruit and green vegetables. The taste is sweet, a bit astringent and spicy, with too many flavors to try to separate. There are hints of grape peel, dirt, cloves, and cocoa/chocolate. It’s a very pleasant blend with only a little bitterness. It reminds me somewhat of the wild grape vines I used to find as a child, how fruity and astringent they were. I would think this was more than 8 percent alcohol, and not because of the strength but more because of the cooling and drying effects. The body is medium, with a spicy finish. I’m not sure I like this as much as some of the reviewers seem to, but it IS different in a good way and I will buy it again if I can find it!

A nice ruddy brown pour with a thick creamy khaki head. The aroma is great, white grapes, peppermint, grape double bubble gum, and cloves. Sweet flavor of olive oil, lemons, cotton candy, and an earthy sweet mushroom flavor. Finishes with lemons and mint, with lingering clove flavor emerging later on. The mouth feel is reminiscent of the feeling I get after eating carrot cake. Ap-4 ar-9 tas-7 pal-4 ov-16

Dark body with tight head bubbles. Nose is sweet fruits, blueberry syrup and corriander (very supprising). Mouthh is skim milk. Flavour is blanaced fruitiness and bitterness. Green vegtable bitterness follows the tounge.
