Poured a murky orange brown color with a soapy off white head. Smelled of caramel, light husky grain, and orange. Medium bodied and slightly sweet with mild to moderate bitterness. Carbonation was pleasantly on the low end of the spectrum. I tasted caramel, toffee, light alcohol, subdued pineapple, and citrusy hops. Pretty good stuff, very much like a double IPA. dkachur (2388), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Oct 6, 2008 22oz. bottle from Sam’s Quik Shop in Durham. Cloudy cranberry color with a large off-white head. Nice lacing. Aroma of caramel, spicy hops, brown sugar, tart cherry. Nutty taste with caramel and very spicy and bristly hop notes. Lemon and brown sugar notes as well. Full bodied and very much like a barleywine. gotohelunc (475), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Sep 26, 2008 Bomber. Everything about this beer seemed like an average barleywine...amber color, sticky sweet smell mixed with alcohol, syrupy flavors with a huge alcoholic finish, and an exorbitant $11/bottle price tag. Unfortunately for an 8% alcohol beer that didn’t even have to leave the county to reach my house, that’s not really a good review. If this stuff were available for $7 a sixer, I’d certainly buy it again as it was an interesting beer, but for that cost I can get some much smoother and far more interesting beers. ucusty (1900), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Sep 1, 2008 I held out on this for almost a month, because of its 10 dollar price tag. What a disappointment. Cloudy amber pour fluffy white head. Hoppy aroma. Hoppy flavor, not enough malts to balance it out. a little warm on the finish Magjayran (1379), Durham, North Carolina, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Aug 30, 2008 Red colored beer with a small off-white head. Sweet apple juice like malt in the aroma with some strong piney presence. Bad mix of flavors. There’s too much sweetness upfront and it clashes with the bitter finish. Not enjoying this one. emacgee (1891), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Aug 28, 2008 Thanks durhambeer for sharing. Pours a reddish amber with a one finger creamy tan/yellow head. The nose was pretty hoppy, more of a piney/herbal hop nose, some alcohol, sweet bready malt. The flavor was warming, had a decent bitterness, piny and herbal hops, could have had more body to support the alcohol and bitterness. Overall not a bad brew, best I’ve had by them. durhambeer (1218), Durham, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 28, 2008 22 oz. bottle from Sam’s. Copper/amber pour with medium creamy off-white head. Some phenols hit the nose at first but seem to disperse and the caramel/toffee malts, citrus, and some pineapple/pine notes hit. Fairly well balanced, though more hops than malt. Very strong/alcoholic smelling, even for an 8.2% beer. Hoppy, bitter and not subtle. Solid local brew, but I don’t imagine myself buying more of these at $11. scraff (1946), Baltimore, Maryland, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 25, 2008 22oz bottle, courtesy of wilkie - Thanks for sharing, Chris! Dark copper, light tan creamy head. Nose held notes of pineapple tea and cherry citrus with warming notes of brown sugar. Molasses and citrus flavors balance on swirls. of caramelized tropical fruit. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, bittersweet finish. Guess I am in the minority here, but I really liked it.
