Commercial Description:
A hybrid style created by crossing our coffee stout with milk stout. Adding unfermentable milk sugar (lactose) in the kettle results in a texture that is rich, chewy and, quite literally, creamy.

Draft at the Olde City location. Pours near black with a thin beige head. The aroma has coffee and roasted malts, with a dark chocolate creaminess. Creamy smooth mouthfeel. The flavor has roasted coffee and a nice creamy sweetness. Very good.

On tap at the brewpub, Philthy. Very nice pour, in a tall glass like it’s a milkshake. Thick and creamy pour, with an awesomely frothy head. Aroma could be sharper but still quite nice, coffee and choc. The mouthfeel is a delight, and the beer has a deep lactic quality to it that’s quite pleasing. I wanted more depth and complexity, but it’s certainly a winner as a more-than-sessionable stout.

Poured black with creamy tan head. Light bodied. Aroma of coffee. Kind of sweet with some coffee hints. Almost creamy. Not bad.

GABF 2007. Coffee smell is thin like when you remove a used filter full of used coffee grounds from the coffee maker; nice roastiness, but not robust and kind of off. Flavor follows suit. Lactic sweetness in the finish is nice, and the coffee and sweetness linger long, but overall this was flat and not that impressive.

GABF 2008. Dark, near-black brown. Intense coffee bean aroma. Coffee dominated palate, generous chocolate also, subtle lactic sweetness, smooth and medium-bodied.

Grabbed a pint at the Old City Philadelphia location while waiting for the Meatmen’s set at the Khyber. Black body, white one finger head, coffee, chocolate and roasted malts round out this Sweet Stout. Dutch Hercules would approve.
