JB175 (1654), Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 14, 2009 Golden color with a highly spiced and sweet aroma. Flavor has lots of assorted spices and a medicinal tinge to it. Nice experiment, not so good results. puzzl (2579), New York, New York, USA Mar 29, 2009 Cask at the Manhattan Cask Fest. Always good to see a gruit being made, though this hardly tastes like other versions I’ve had. Sweet rosemary and thyme aroma, malt and black pepper. Mild wintergreen and juniper flavor, cinnamon. Decent but a bit of a herb and spice sludge. JoeMcPhee (4893), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Mar 29, 2009 Cask at 3rd Manhattan Cask Fest. Deep brown with a touch of ruby highlights. The aroma is very herbal. Sweet gale, rosemary, lavender and rosehips. Floral and spicy. There is a bit of astringency mid-palate that actually lends the beer a nice silky body. There is a touch of caramel through the middle that works quite well. It is light-bodied and quite refreshing. There seems to be a kiss of cinnamon as well that is quite different from most gruits I’ve had before. I like it. PilsnerPeter (2585), Flushing, New York, USA Mar 24, 2009 Cask at 3rd Manhattan Cask Fest: Pours a headless rusty brown. Unique aroma- some vegetal character, lots of lavender and odd spicy notes of basil & oregano. Slick on the palate. The flavor has a light herbal/lavender sweetness, some ginger, along with those Italian herbs that the aroma gave off of dried oregano- almost like olive oil & herb crackers. Quite herbal overall. Interesting and unique. notalush (2626), Denver, Colorado, USA Mar 21, 2009 Sampled at Manhattan Cask Fest - medium-bodied, semi-tart beer, with underlying notes of rye, bitter orange peel, caraway, tangy cherry - mildly acidic and a wee bit bready - some lightly spicy ginger - interesting, and pretty tasty. eaglefan538 (2351), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Mar 20, 2009 On draft at the Philly location. The pour was hazy amber to brown, near to no head or lacing. The aroma was herbs and spices, ginger most noteable for the latter. The flavor was nasty, cough medicinal notes all over everywhere, combined with that ginger character that just turns me off on most anything, especially beer. Light wheat-like body under it all, but man, I couldn’t get past all those disgusting spices and floral notes. Ick. Light body, watery in many ways. May I never find a time machine and accidentally end up back to the Goths of the United Kingdom, yikes! Thanks goodness for hops these days. Adam77 (407), Eastampton, New Jersey, USA Mar 18, 2009 Hand pump. Poured brown with tiny off white head. Low carb. Some hops but mostly sweet malt flavor. Tad bit of fruit in the finish. TomDecapolis (3122), Skippack, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 14, 2009 Tap at Triumph in Philly (beerofthebike -PBW09). Pours a hazy brownish amber with a smaller bubbly off white head. Aroma of Ginger, mint leaves, lots of herbal and earthy notes and sweet malts. Flavor of the same herbal/minty thing with sweet malts and some caramel.
