"Traditional" spices and herbs? Since I’m a hop-head, I was pretty sure the experiment was going to fail. I was wrong! I really enjoyed it! Poured a pleasant, clear reddish brown with a decent tan head. Flavor was unusual but very good! This was my first gruit and I’ll be back for more. pobenohne (504), Northern Liberties, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 23, 2004 Cask at Princeton location. Clear deep dark mahogony ale, modest airy head, delicate lace. First taste awesome creamy texture (cask), then seemingly thin. Very delicate flavors of (my guess) saffron, ginger, and a hint of anise? beaconstreet (811), Washington DC, USA

The hops are noteably missing, but the flavors are incredible. Gruit, whatever it is, is a phenomenal taste. Also great for those that like to transpose themselves as they drink a beer--the brewery claims that it is brewed in a Medieval style, so you could feel what it is like to drink back then. A great beer for a celebration. Yes, even truly, a Triumph. Jine (896), Nutley, New Jersey, USA

Decent. MaiBockAddict (1499), Good Beer Bar Deprived, New Jersey, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Aug 1, 2004 Hand Pump. Clear and brownish, with a tan head. A christmas like spicy aroma. A spicy light malty flavor. Tingly palate. Not sure what spices to pick out, but I know they are there. Perhaps more suited for a December seasonal... willblake (2186), Belcamp, Maryland, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Jul 21, 2004 07.21.04 Princeton, handpump. Smells almost exactly like the Heavyweight 2 Druids. Unctuous, coating palate - yet strangely thin as it finished. Rosemary really dominates, cinnamon is indeed present. The rosemary leaves a persistent piney aftertaste. Interesting and much more drinkable IMO than the HW2DG. Rootbeer colored with ample head and medium lace. I hope that more brewers catch the bug and experiment with this style. This beer, while delicious, is anything but quaffable. freekyp (902), Thomasville, North Carolina, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 2/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 19, 2004 Updated: Jun 23, 2006One of the strangest brews I’ve ever had the pleasure of trying. At the time of this rating, the only other gruit ale I’d had was Heavyweight’s, which is a light bodied tart summery brew. By comparison, this brew is a meal in a bottle. The nose is chock full of Rosemary, with a bit of cinnamon. A numbing clove aspect spreads across the tongue in no time with a strongly alcoholic tide. Clear ruby with a spare off-white head, this brew is all about the unusual. Made with Bog Myrtle? What the hizzay?
