Commercial Description:
Scotch Ale, sometimes called "Wee Heavy," is stronger and bigger-bodied than Scottish Ale. Roastiness and caramel sweetness are prominent, along with alcohol warmth. Ours is made with a bit of the peat-smoked malt used in the manufacture of Scotch whisky.

Mild smokiness, sweet malt in the aroma. Scorched malt dominates midway through with a sweet almost raisony finish. How is this 9.5%?

Deep amber pour with creamy white head and lace. Medium malt and abv on the nose. Sweet maltiness, light abv, a decent building bitter finish. Slightly thin but a very nice beer overall.

Tap at the Princeton brewpub. Clear copper color with a nice beige head. Aroma of scotch (whiskey), caramel malt, and mild hops. Flavor was more of the same, with the scotch really standing out even though I know scotch whiskey and scotch ales are not supposed to be similar. Must be the peat smoked malt. Body medium.

Tap at Philly. Served into a snifter. Pour is dark brown/purple with a two finger caramel colored head. Aromas of piney hops, caramel, sweet fruits, and some candy. Flavor is well balanced with hops up front, sweet fruits, warming alcohol, and nice vanilla in the finish. Outstanding brew with the 9.5% hidden very well.

Draft pint at the Philadelphia brewpub. Red-tinged brown with a fizzle of head retention. Very sugary aroma. Likewise, rich roasty sugars come out in the drink. Almost too sweet. (#3184, 11/8/2007)

Very good attempt at a largely forgotten style. Nicely sweet and malty. Not a lot of hops. Well hidden alcohol content.
