Commercial Description:
Dead Reckoning is unfiltered and weighs in at 5.8% abv and 53 IBU’s. It features Pilsner, Caramel, Chocolate and Roasted malts along with Chinook and Vanguard hops. “The outstanding taste and flavor of Dead Reckoning originates in the chocolate and roasted malts,” says John Trogner. “There is a nice hoppiness in the front of the beer, but the rich, smooth mouth feel is what really stands out.”

12oz pour into a tulip glass. A nice coffee colored head that was huge and aromatic. This is my favorite porter except for Victorys but that is a huge porter. As far as a standard porter it gets no better than this for American versions. Nice and hoppy for a porter too, both in the nose and at the back end. Lacing is nice as well as the stickiness without cloyingly sweet after taste. Begins with the sweet malt backbone and hops fighting for dominance and finishes with the perfect compromise to both. AWESOME

12oz. bottle, dated 080708, with thanks to LilBeerDoctor for the nice bonus. Pours a dark brown with a creamy two finger tan head, good lacing and retention. Aroma is fresh coffee, chocolate and toasted nuts. Flavor is more of the same, with a bit of hoppy bitterness. A decent porter, thanks again Margaret!

A solid pour into my 25cl tulip glass produces an almost four-finger thick, well browned, dark tan colored head. The head sticks around for quite some time and even leaves some layered lacing patterns on the sides of my glass. The beer is quite dark and almost a perfect black color, but does show a brilliantly clear, burnt ruby hue if held up directly to the light. The aroma is quite roast focused, but there is a solid backdrop of hop aromatics that while not dominant definitely add some pungency to the nose. Aromas of cold black coffee, citrus oil, toasted whole grain bread, burnt cocoa, and a dry, browned cracker note in the finish. As my nose adjusts the hop aromatics become quite a bit more focused, they actually compete and almost balance the roast character after a short time.

Sweet malt up front is quickly tempered by a dry, bitter roast character and an herbal hop character. My second sip has me noticing a citrus-like hop component much more and this mixes in pretty well with a dry, dark chocolate note, a burnt caramel, and the commanding, but not harsh, roast character. The roast character really lingers on in the palate after each sip, there is a touch of herbal hop bitterness too, but mostly notes of burnt grain husks and black, bitter coffee. The hop character is really pretty big here and it works too; herbal hop notes of menthol, a touch of hemp are as noticeable, if not more sometimes, as the citrus notes of grapefruit and spicy, essential citrus oil. A solid biting bitterness gets a bit green at times in the finish and is a product of both the roast character and the hops, though you can separate out the two influences. I like the body of this beer, it has a touch of chewy malt richness to it, but overall it is quite drinkable without being too light to support the combined hop and roast grain character. Dark chocolate notes and toasted, yet faintly sweet, whole grain

Pours a dark dark Chocolate Brown with a big ole toffee colored head. The nose has an initial hoppiness backed by roasted nuts, chocolate and coffee. Nice hoppy bitterness balanced by the sweet roasted malts. Sweet Chocolate and coffee fill the mouth and then it finishes with a nice bitterness. Pretty darn good.

12.10.08 A very nice and well balanced porter. I recommend this highly. The roasted malts match well with the bitterness level at 50+ IBU. Good stuff

12 oz. bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a medium sized dense tan head that leaves a film of bubbles on the glass. The aroma is malt and coffee notes melding with grassy hops. The flavor has a roasted chocolate malt presented with the advertised rich smooth mouthfeel. The hops are present, but are secondary to the malt. Finish is on the dry side. A decent addition to our local beer selection.

Bottle, thanks to Ty5592! Pours dark brown with a thick and lacy tan head. Lots of sweet nutty chocolate goodness in the aroma and taste, with a dash of coffee and some piney hops showing through for balance.
