The label shows a hand holding a compass that is, for some strange reason, sticking up out of some water. Black pour with spotty lacing. This has a full nose - tangy, sweet, and malty, with hints of coffee, soy sauce, and peat. The flavor is complex and bold - toasted grain, malts, coffee, and sharp hops that scrub the palate. The malt reminds me a little of Samuel Smith, but this is very much its own superb brew. garthicus (1289), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Big aroma, roasted malt, chocolate, a little fruity. Black pour, thick tan head. In the mouth, the roasted malts and citric hops are both strong and well balanced. Some aniseed and earthy chocolate in the finish. Thick and smooth on the palate. Ron (1018), Rochester, New York, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Nov 21, 2008 A black pour with a medium sized tan head. Aroma has hops and roasted malt. Chocolate malt flavor with some smoke, nuts, and a bit of hops. Finishes bitter with a tad hint of sweetness to round that out. blipp (1669), Newark, New Jersey, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 20, 2008 Bottle. Pours deep brown with a beige head. Roasted malt aroma with grassy and floral hops. Well balanced flavor with roasted bitterness, coffee, and hoppy notes. Nice. Snoop59 (73), Penn Run, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 19, 2008 12 oz. bottle. Pours a deep, dark brown with a two-finger tan, frothy head with good retention. Good lacing. The aroma is of roasty malt with a slight tinge of coffee, and a wonderful citrus hop aroma. Taste is initially a citrus hop flavor followed by a roasty maltiness that is accompanied by hints of chocolate and coffee. Excellent balance. Medium body. Soft carbonation. fredandboboflo (1404), East Setauket, New York, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Nov 18, 2008 Bottle. Aroma somewhat vegetal accompanied by standard and fairly weak porter notes (roasted malt, slight coffee, slight chocolate). Flavor the same. Somewhat weak-bodied. A disappointment. rugbydude05 (298), Kew Gardens, New York, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 18, 2008 Pours an opaque black color, no light passes through. No head. Aroma was more hoppy and like vegetables than
chocolate/caramel malts. Taste was very very hoppy and lacking body but a very dry and crisp taste,
chocolate taste comes out later in the drink when it warms up. Bitter.
Palate was average, looks and feels more like soda in your glass than a beer.
