Commercial Description:
Dead Reckoning is unfiltered and weighs in at 5.8% abv and 53 IBU’s. It features Pilsner, Caramel, Chocolate and Roasted malts along with Chinook and Vanguard hops. “The outstanding taste and flavor of Dead Reckoning originates in the chocolate and roasted malts,” says John Trogner. “There is a nice hoppiness in the front of the beer, but the rich, smooth mouth feel is what really stands out.”

Courtesy of lb4lb. The aroma is very citrus influenced, quite hoppy, with chocolate and toasted malt accents. The body is a ruddy brown and it holds a finger sized tan head. Fairly big hop fore, tastes way too hopped for the style in my opinion, downplays the malt attributes. Sweet malt, mild chocolate and a brown ale nuttiness. Just seems to be the wrong choice of hops and hop levels for a porter. I suppose it is decent as a beer, but as a porter, I’m not a fan at all.

07 vintage 12 oz. Opaque mahogany with a large head that lasts. Earthy cocoa, grapefruit, resin and caramel aroma. Front flavor follows the aroma, with a nice finish of oak, spicy green herb, char and smoke. Medium body is smooth, hop tingly and nearly chalky-dry.

Bottle: Murky, middleweight brown pour with a large, foamy tan head. Thick lacing. Roasty and bittersweet cocoa aroma with hoppy hints up front. Taste maintains the good hop presence with a chocolate and malty smooth finish. I like the crisp hoppy, yet smooth chocolately finish here. Nice little hoppy porter.

[bottle - 12 oz] Dark black pour with a creamy tan head. Aroma is rich and chocolaty with some good roasted and burnt malts as well. Some light hints of cream. Flavor is very roasted at the beginning with a mildly sweet and bitter chocolate middle and a very thick, creamy, and chewy finish. [[1400th Rating]]

almost black pour with a medium sized tan head. Aroma is up front hops and roasted malt. Chocolate malt flavor with some smoke, nuts, and a bit of hops. Finishes bitter with a tad hint of sweetness to round that out.

Another tasty brew from troeg’s. This one was a bit hoppier than I would like in a porter, but pretty easy drinking overall. Pours a muddy brown with thin off-white head. Aroma of citrus hops, chocolate and roasted nuts. Chocolate and nut taste up front, with a surprisingly bitter metallic finish. It was really good up until the end, but decent overall.

I thought this porter was a slight bit too hoppy and not nearly enough roasty. The roast complex just feels to fall a bit short, almost as if you were to take an IPA and go 60/40 with a dark porter. It is still a great beer, but when I choose a beer style, it is because I want that style of beer and don’t necessarily want a super hoppy porter hybrid thing. The flavors are all nice though, so I’ll rate it higher than I think it deserves.
