Commercial Description:
Dead Reckoning is unfiltered and weighs in at 5.8% abv and 53 IBU’s. It features Pilsner, Caramel, Chocolate and Roasted malts along with Chinook and Vanguard hops. “The outstanding taste and flavor of Dead Reckoning originates in the chocolate and roasted malts,” says John Trogner. “There is a nice hoppiness in the front of the beer, but the rich, smooth mouth feel is what really stands out.”

bottle. pours a deep dark brown that seems to have some sort of clarity to it when it’s thin enough to let the light through. a nice thick tan head sticks around like an unwanted ex. upon initial smell, what really stands out to me is the hops. they still take a back seat to the dominant roasted malt and light hints of dark chocolate, but this is a hoppy porter. it smells like it’s going to be quite sweet, and as i’m having this for dessert, i find that quite welcoming. just as it smells, the roasted and chocolate malts dominate, but the hops are assertive and impossible to deny. any more hoppy or any less malty and this would come close to a black ipa. a thick, chewy, piney citrusy hop flavor is like that little kid on the plane behind me who kept kicking my seat, except enjoyable. the finish is moderately bitter, and lightly sweet, and the mouthfeel brings it back into the realm of porters, being smooth and creamy, rather than resinous as the hop flavors had me expecting. the medium body and abundant prickly carbonation also stand true to style. while the malt flavors dominate, the hop flavors are quite a bit more assertive than i expect from a porter. i don’t necessarily consider that a bad thing. could be a bit more complex, but quite enjoyable just the same.

Bottle, pours root beer brown with tons of floaters and a nice thick, lingering medium tan head. Nose is quite nice with chocolate, dried fruit and molasses. Flavor is dry and malty with influence of coffee, chocolate, but not too smooth or sweet. Just decent, wouldn’t work too hard to find..

Sept. 2007 - Beer pours dark brown with nice head and excellent lacing. Aroma of grapefruit. Flavor was a blend of grapefruit hops and milky chocolate. Eh...not overly fond of those flavors together. Nice and smooth, but maybe a little watery. Just ok...wouldn’t seek this out again.

Roasted malts are the big attraction in the aroma, coffee like textures dazzle your sniffer, taste is all that roastedness, with the same coffee, and a bitterness in the finish seems more from the dark malts then the hops,I didn’t pick up much on the hops as others did. Another outstanding Troegs brew. Thanks Ubeamartian

Pours a dark cloudy chocolate color, with very little head. Malty chocolate flavor with a the hops really coming through at the end. Good porter, first one I’ve had that has a noticeable hoppy flavor.

Bottle, #355 Black pour with nice microbubble head. Roasted malt aroma and a flavor well combining hops and malt. Good porter overall.

Thick brown pour with a nice off-white creamy head. Smell is full of roasted hops. Flavor is also roasted and very hoppy. This is exactly how I like my Porters! Body is very porter-esque - a hint thin but perfect for the style. Maybe I just have an obsession with Troegs and my ratings are becoming biased - but oh well - this was a damn good beer! One of my favorite porters yet!

Big thanks to ahatcher78 on BA for the bottle!
Pours a deep brown that is almost black with a big creamy and lasting light tan head that leaves good lacing. Smell is dark roastiness with a very prevalent hop character making its way in the nose. They mix very well giving it a really nice unique, nice nose. Taste is dark chocolate roastiness, with a great vibrant hop character that gives it a fresh almost minty flavor behind the roastiness. Moderate to slightly bubbly mouthfeel making this medium bodied porter extremely drinkable. Definitely one of my favorites, if not my absolute favorite porter.
