Commercial Description:
Next up, we present Scratch Beer #11-2008, a Bitter. We used to brew a little number called Tröegs ESB. Even though this beer was retired almost six years ago, we still get numerous Tröegs old-schoolers begging for its return.

Well hang onto your boot straps because Scratch #11 is about as close as we can get to the original ESB without firing up the old brew kettle. The Scratch #11 recipe originates from Chris’ stint at England’s University of Sunderland brewing program. After returning to Colorado the brothers drew on Chris’ experience and brewed pilot batches tweaking that recipe. The ESB production recipe has direct bloodlines to these pilot batches.

Bottle: The aroma consists caramel, fruit, and light earthy and slightly spicy hops. It pours a mostly transparent amber with a small off-white head. The flavor starts with some very light caramel and fruit. The finish is lightly citrusy and earthy hops. Light bodied with mild carbonation.

Bottle in trade from ogglethorp. Thanks Brian! Pours amber with a medium lived creamy beige head. Smell is toasted malt with some iced tea notes. Flavor is similar with iced tea and toasty, bready malt and light floral hops to it that provide a nice balance and solid bitterness. Medium body and carbonation. Pretty tasty and sessionable.

Thanks ogglethorp! Gusher. After it settles down, pours a hazy copper with a dense, active beige head that never fully dies away. Plentiful lace. Pleasant malt aroma with a little peach hard candy in it. Flavor has a solid, slightly sweet malt backbone, with a pleasant fruitiness and a slightly off metallic edge. Very smooth mouthfeel with a lively effervescence in the mouth. I can’t help but wonder if I got an off bottle, but enjoyable nonetheless.

12 oz. bottle via trade with goryshkewych - Pours a slightly hazy deep amber color with a one and a half finger thick off white head. Nice lacing. Has a pine and herbal hop aroma. Flavor is mostly hops with a little bit of malt hiding in the background and some light esters. Medium body. A nice beer. Thanks George.

Thanks to fyrecracker for the bottle. Amber pour with a slight haze. Thin tan head and no lace. Piney aroma. Thin bodied. Nice bittersweet balance. A solid esb if there is such a thing.

Pours copper with a thin tan head. Smells rosey and spicy. Tastes sweet and rosey with some sugary splashes and earthiness present on the finish.

12oz bottle. Pours a copper color with thin tan head that fades to a thin layer of foam. The aroma is a touch of hops atop a solid malt background that produces strong caramel aromas and a touch of fruit. The taste is very strong roasted malt up front, followed by a healthy dose of pine. A bit of sweetness can be detected after a few drinks.

Tasty, definitely a pretty good attempt at an American-style ESB. Proper slightly sweet malt and a good bite of hops. I think the EKG is the nice finish on it. (Fresh from Brewery - Growler 11/28/2008)
