Sample at the gingerman, NYC.... It’s dark in here but it looks pretty close to black with a frothy light tan head... Aroma of roast and very mild coffee notes...Roasted malt and cocoa make up the flavors. Kind of dull and lacking in assertiveness. Soft carbonation and somewhat thin palatewise.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a nice tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, nuts, coffee, a touch of hops and a strong amount of oatmeal. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong assertive roasted malt flavour with nuts, caramel and a small amount of coffee flavouring at the end. Aftertaste shows a rather bitter nutty beer with a lactic taste, plenty of roasted oatmeal and some light coffee scents. Overall, a good beer - strong, but not overly bitter - the coffee comes out well and is the leading characteristic, but doesn’t overpower the other stuff. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Norm’s in Vienna, Virginia on 02-October-2009 sampled in Washington on 17-October-2009.

22oz bottle. Large beige head that leaves nice lacing, atop dark brown body. Aroma is medium sweet, oatmeal, chocolate, roast, some espresso, floral. Taste is moderately sweet, chococoffee, some roast, oatmeal, floral/earthy, light anise. Watery light-medium body that holds the alcohol surprisingly well.

Nice beer that’ s great on tap but I can see this one changing in bottle. That fresh clean taste tapped beers have is rampant in this one, and I loved it. The coffee is light, extremely light for a beer that’s named Java Head. But it’s good. I got the oatmeal sweetness and god damnit why does every stout have to be an oatmeal finishing stout? Decent beer but I wouldn’t shell out the money for the bombers. Glad I got to try it.

Bomber. Pours a leathery dark brown with a slow rising, but fairly large tan head. It’s sticking around for a while from the looks of things and there is some nice sudsy lacing clinging to the side of the glass where it has receded. Aromas are pretty weak... I was expecting a blast of coffee and chocolate, and instead I’ve found a hodgepodge of hops smells. A bit of pine and pineapple, but it’s pretty faint. I guess that there is a bit of chocolate there, but this was not the start that I was looking for. Flavor is much more predictable and right off the bat I find myself enjoying the oatmeal flavors. They lend an interesting counterbalance to the brusque coffee flavor (although this flavor seems a little stale... like old gas station coffee more than premium overpriced "venti" coffee.) There’s an nice play between the sweet and creamy chocolate and oatmeal front to this and the more edgy finish from the coffee. Not bad stuff...

pitch black with frothy tannish white head, very attractive looking brew. mild roast to the nose. flavor with initial bitterness that is moderate, but lingering and intermixes with the coffee notes, before some low crystal sweetness and some floral hop notes. a brew that is just too understated for the alcohol content. the coffee flavor is present, but not worthy of the title, and the rest of the beer is pretty standard for, what i would presume would be a russian imperial stout, by the abv and hop presence

22 oz. bottle from Grape & Gourmet. Black pour with a beautiful, bubbly tan head. Light coffee and dark chocolate aroma. Great flavor; roasted malt, smoke, and coffee. Creamy mouthfeel. A very good coffee stout.

Beautiful looking, black, not much of any highlights visible, thick head, some retention, heavy lacing. Hoppy aroma, pine, espresso. Palate is very hefty, heavy hop content, lots of coffee, lots of chocolate, and carbonation. Not well blended, not many subtleties, but interesting. Wonder what aging would do?
