Commercial Description:
Naked Elf takes a hard look at the less-is-more theory. Ever since we developed The Mad Elf, we’ve speculated what it would taste like without the cherries and honey. So what lies beneath the fruit? Naked Elf is unfiltered, so the spicy yeast taste is more prominent in this strong, hazy orange ale. The combination of the Pilsner, and Vienna malts give a lot of body and minimal sweetness, but Naked Elf has a dry finish. Finally, the heat of the alcohol makes its presence known in the finish. The Naked Elf’s finest quality is the delicate balancing act between a lively yeast kick and a slight alcohol note that lingers in the back of the mouth—constantly reminding us not to overindulge in this complex, warming elixir.

On draught at Max’s Taphouse in Baltimore pre Red Sox-Orioles. The bartender told me this was a quad--oh well. Aroma is full of fruit-mainly bananas, also some bubblegum (this is the first time I have picked up on this), and some belgian yeast and spices. Flavor is full and continues with the fruit, spices, and adds a little brown sugar. Alcohol is well controlled. I enjoyed this one.

On tap at River St. Ale House and the yeasty kick is here with some bubblegum sweetness, spices and a slight alcoholic presence that becomes known despite the fact its only 6.8%.This one is tasty even though its stripped down. I found it enjoyable but do like the flavorings added to the Mad version. It seems a bit boring unless you just relax and enjoy the semi-dry palate and fruits going on here. Is this better bottled?

Draft at Mad Mex Robinson, 8/16/07. It looks good, nice golden color, almost no head though. That’s where it stops. Aroma is a wonderful mix of bandaids and spearmint chewing tobacco. Quite possibly the most over the top blatant beat you over the head phenolic mess I’ve ever had. Flavor is more bandaids, more minty tobacco and a wonderful alcohol burn. The most mouthwash like beer I’ve ever had.

Delicious. Enjoyed this at Circa in High Bridge. Mad Elf minus the cherry and honey. A great balance and very drinkable. Full flavored and unique. A great idea with a most satisfying outcome. Great with pasta and maple syrup.

I’ve been waiting a while to try this. I’ve heard a lot of rumors about it. On tap at the Mad Mex in Robinson. Nice thin lacing down the sides of the glass. The color os slightly hazy iced tea. Very thin head that leaves a tea froth on top of the brew. Strong sweetish aroma that appears to be some what like peppermint. The somewhat peppermint aromas carry over into the firsts tastes. Mint volatile candy greets the taste buds. Also has the hints of a fine liquor but it is not necessarily mouth coating like liquor is. I’m impressed with the whole kit and caboodle. Virtually flat with hardly any noticeable carbonation tingle. Nice to try this beer without the imperfections of hops. This is a refined brew that never lets the 7% alky attack the palate. I’ve read on some labels that the alky content is actually closer to 9%. Be careful, you’ll get more than you bargained for if you drink this as quick as the taste encourages. Finish is building bitterness from mild to medium and it hangs out on your palate for a while. Glad to have had a chance to try this unique concoction. Much more enjoyable than Tripel Karmeliet. Almost as good as Grimbergen Blonde and Chimay White!

On draft at Smokin Joes.....Very sweet taste, huge taste of banana. Very bubblegum as a whole. Was not overly sweet, with a slight taste of alcohol at the end.

Draft, at BCTC 2007. Poured hazy deep amber with a moderate sized khaki head. Wheaty, yeasty aroma, with abundant spice. Complex flavors; yeast, spice, malt, clove, banana, and earthy notes. I actually like this substantially more than the Mad Elf., which i find overly sweet.
