The aroma is the best feature of this beer, it is quite unique and appealing. There were scents of pineapple, heavy tangerine/tangelo, light hint of pepper, caramel, and also a candy-like quality as well. The taste was a bit of a let-down, with much less complexity than the aroma. The taste was very caramel dominant, with just a faint taste of bitter hops on the finish. Medium mouthfeel. Flavor is also sweet, fruity hops. After taste is a little grassy, but over all a very smooth and drinkable IPA. I like it! Good brew!***rerate***** Bottle shared by wolf....This one was a little hoppier than I remembed. Had a good malty backbone. Sugary sweet, lots of fruity and grassy hops...good beer. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 11, 2008 Mmm, nice. Now thats some hops. Pours a deep chestnut red, full creamy khaki head, and moderate lacing that didn’t have time to form because I drank this so fast! Yep, this is one beer that screams, "Don’t mess around, drink me". Its very potable. Huge hop aroma, floral, grapefruit, pine resin, maybe just a bit of cannabis. Flavor also hop dominated with a tingly twangy tart hoppiness with more grapefruit and resins. Finishes with a peppery hop bitterness and just near the end, you’re reminded there’s malt in here, a big thick breadiness that reveals just a touch of alcohol. Slipstream (777), USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Mar 11, 2008 Brass brew with a light head. A nicely bittered, hoppy ale, with hints of sweat, marijuana, grapefruit, and pine. Pretty sharp flavor - but it is not as tasty as other Troeg’s releases. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 10, 2008 A Mes rate: Bottle drunk back at the hotel in Antwerp, big thanks to MikeTD. A little watery looking but a nice brown / amber colour. Petrol hop aroma but they are really good hops. More balance in the flavour than I was expecting. Nice toffee malt and some big big American hops. Surprisingly light in the body making it very drinkable for its reasonable abv. Hit of grassy hops on the finish. Decent stuff but not quite explosive... milljam (584), Norman, Oklahoma, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 10, 2008 Pours a golden, clear red brown with a light, foamy head. Aroma of fruit, mainly citrus. Flavor is interesting up front, with a simultaneous pairing of both malt and hops. There is a caramel sweetness, and also the fresh, fruity hop flavor. Finish is a crisp bitterness with a lingering earthy hoppness. Aside from the slight heaviness of the malt up front, a very good beer. OSLO (828), Minnesota, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 8, 2008 [Bottle, thanks a lot Stine!] Pours dark golden with a small off-white head. Aroma is really fruity with a lot of tangerine, maybe some mandarin orange and a hint of mango. Really nice. Taste is not nearly as good. Very malt dominant up front and in the finish with light hoppy bitterness in between. Really nice aroma on this beer, but the taste was pretty plain. Nuffield (2724), Roseville, Minnesota, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 8, 2008 I was quite taken with the aroma--the use an interesting blend of hops gives it a quality separate from the main pine/grapefruit IPA varieties. I agreed with others that there was a tangerine-like note to it; definitely citrus. The flavor was less remarkable, having a hop note but plain malt base without quite the touch of sweetness that often works in a double IPA--the bottle here said "Imperial Amber" so I don’t think that expectation was too much. A bit limp for a palate. Overall, interesting, esp. for its aroma, and worth picking up if you see a single. Thanks for sharing, Minnesota raters!
