Lush chocolatey nose with rich hazelnut, some roast and subtle earthy hops. Flavor is drier than anticipated with medium bitterness. Roasted malts dominate but background elements include ash, cardboard, and hops. Less rich and smooth than expected with some starchiness. A fair oatmeal stout, but doesn’t quite live up to the nice aroma.

It seems to be jam packed with nutty flavors, hops, coffee-like flavors welded in a relatively smooth finish. There is a roasted smokiness in the end notes. I like everything but a tiny note of atsringent malty mettalic notes I detect in the aftertaste. This is the best I’ve had from Troegs so far! Crosling (1854), Loveland, Colorado, USA

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Dec 13, 2005 Bottle: Courtesy of Secret Santa. Aroma of chocolate, nuts, roasted grain, and light coffee. Pours a dark brown with no transparency with a small tan head. Flavors are very subdued. Light chocolate up front with nutty and roasted coffee finish. This is very smooth, but I think it’s because the flavors just aren’t big and bold enough. dondk (28), leetsdale, Pennsylvania, USA

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 20, 2005 12 oz. bottle. dark roasted malt and oatmeal aroma. flavors are more of the same with some caramel and dark chocolate malt flavors as well. very fizzy up front and then settles down to a smooth, pleasant bitter finish. liked this one but had a hard time with the fizz up front. thanks to Lou18 for the stout in a recent trade. jefcon (999), Arlington, Virginia, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Nov 6, 2005 A heady stout in the glass, deep brown in color. Some sticky lacing. Coffee paralyzes the nose, but there is some aroma of ovaltine that sneaks in. The palate is the key to this oatmeal stout -- which really needs food to cut the acidity. Medium mouthfeel, light astringency and a fleeting finish. Still, with food, the creamy chocolate center of the beer becomes evident. altkencru (143), USA
