Anyway, this beer is currently heavy in my rotation as it were- relatively cheap, relatively local and fresh. It pours a jet black, opaque and unpentrable color with a quickly fading head. The aroma is roasty, hoppy and sweet. The flavor is similar, well balanced and finishing with a roasty/hoppy bitter-sweet and lingering quality. Overall a bit sweeter than I like my beers, but a fine example nontheless. pjk33 (384), Sligo - Curllsville Heights, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 13, 2005 Bottle. Pours nice and dark, but not completely black. Small head that laces well, but does not stay with the brew long. Nose is pretty interesting, but not incredibly strong. Hoppy with a cool sweetness, somekind of fruit there, but I’m lost in figuring what it is... maybe a sweet concord grape smell or cherry...? Either way, let’s begin... Immediate hop taste with a touch of sweet malt that leaves too quickly as the bitter hop and coffee flavor lingers. Maybe some cough syrup taste in there, but it is actually pretty pleasing. As it warms, it improves greatly, especially the texture of silky smoothness. Nice slick viscous palate. Could use a touch more body, but nice. Overall, this is another nice piece of work by the folks at Troegs. I like it! hawkshadow (102), Rural Retreat, Virginia, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | May 11, 2005 I like this brewery more and more.
Very dark, very rich and smooth with just a nice hit of bitterness.
I like this stout because it gets a nice strong flavor without the burnt flavors that overpower some other stouts. lamas (728), Adams Morgan, Washington DC, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 4, 2005 Updated: May 5, 2005Bottle. Bottled on: 09/08/04. Deep mahogany pour with two finger thick creamy dark-khaki head that leaves lots of lace. Very fresh aroma of vanilla beans, rich coffee and milk chocolate. Very smooth. Roasty malts and burnt toast dominate the understated flavors. Some vanilla and bitter hops are also there. Very slight presence of warming alcohol. can8ianben (908), Pasadena, California, USA

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Apr 24, 2005 Great stout. Good and strong, really dark. Head didn’t last long. It’s just a little too sweet. Jonathan3584 (323), Washington, Washington DC, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Apr 22, 2005 Fair beer. Dark pour, but slightly thin. Could have been more roasty and less sweet. Troegs ought to stick to lagers. BrianG (38), Big Stone Gap, Virginia, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Apr 5, 2005 This was my first exposure to a stout. Poured very dark, almost black. Tan head that dissipated quickly. Hint of bitterness, but the coffee and chocolate stood out. I liked this beer.
