Commercial Description:
Tröegs Rugged Trail Ale is a unique rendition of a classic English Brown. It has a deep bronze color, rocky head, and prominent Fuggle hop aroma. Toasted amber and Chocolate malts impart a "Nutty" richness and creamy velvet texture.

12 oz bottle pours very dark ruby with little tan head. Very earthy aroma with grass, molasses and some coffee. Not too sweet, touch of some umami and a decent butter coffee finish. Decent beer but nothing too complex. Decent carb on tongue and very drinkable.

Appears a translucent deep brown. Goes down rather smooth. Thin head with a slight chocolate nose.

(Draught) Dark brown and almost clear. Small white head. Strong malty aroma. Medium bodied and still watery palate with lot of carbonation. Malts, roastedness and bitterness in taste. Malty and bitter aftertaste. This beer is easy to drink and taste is ok but bit boring.

Very nice malt profile, full of chocolate, with just a hint of bitter roast coming through. Hops made no distinct impression, but balanced the sweetness of the malt. Smooth finish was satisfying. I’d drink it again.

I recently tried a bottle of Troegs Nut Brown. The aroma was subtle malty and slightly fruity. Poured a thin head which dissapated quickly and overall was a lightly carbonated as I would expect from a brown ale. The flavor was good but subdued, the malt was there and some plum flavors, with very little hop flavor or bitterness. Overall a fine beer, a little thin in flavor and mouthfeel, but I would drink one again.

A little thin for my liking but overall a good brown ale. Great session beer.

An excellent brown, generally a very boring style, this one was dressed up a bit. Cola and chocolate nose. Palate is nutty, sweet, malty with a bit of coffee at the back end. Smoky. Complex and rewarding. Appearance is a reddish brown.

Two fingers of pillowy off-white (tan) head. Thick, opaque. Dark brown with a red tinge at the edges. Slightest hints of light pass through. The smell is smoky with a hint of some mocha and dark chocolate. Some slightly bitter English malts. Feint, but pleasant enough. The taste is sweet dark caramel and chocolate. Mocha coffee. Malts are bready and dry, and they balance the sweeter stuff. Nutty, not overly cloying, as some browns can be. Not the brown sugar. The feel is milky and smooth on the tongue. Velvety. Top notch. It’s really one of the better browns I have had. It’s bitter and sweet as well. Loaded with caramel and hints of chocolate. Just great.
