Commercial Description:
Scratch Beer 1 - 2007, a hybrid beer (California Common Beer), will be released on or about April 26. This is a beer we brewed on the back patio on more than one occasion. It became the inspiration for Tröegs Pale Ale. The simplest explanation of what makes a hybrid beer unique is the brewer is forcing a lager to do something it doesn’t want to do. Scratch 1 uses lager yeast fermented at a warmer temperature. The fermented malt gives an exaggerated fruity undertone to the beer which combines nicely with the citrus flavors of Cascade hops. Balancing out the taste are spicy, earthy flavors derived from Brewer’s Gold hops. Slightly aggressive hops in the front of the mouth give way to a clean, subtle grape-like finish.

Poured a hazed yellow with a white head. Lemony citrus aroma with a sweet malt base. Lemon and toasted malt flavor. Bitter comes in quick and goes for a very long and dry finish. Light to medium bodied.

Bottling No. 1-2007

2/12/2008: Tröegs Scratch 1 (California Common) pours a cloudy lemon yellow color with a foamy white head. The aroma has a blend of subtle honey malt, citrus/fruit, and lightly spicy hops. The flavor has a nice blend of pale malt/cereal grain character, light esters (fruit flavor reminds me vaguely of kiwi and/or honeydew mellon with a touch of cucumber or something...), yeast, and some bitter citrus and earthy hops that grab at the throat. The lingering flavor is quite floral and perfume-like with the Cascade hop flavor coming through as well. The body is medium-light with a smooth and crisp palate. IT is easy to drink and quite refreshing. This is a nice example of a California Common beer (which is more of a method than a style, in my opinion). Good? = Yes. Worth trying once? = Yes. Worth the $3.50/bottle price tag? = Not really.

12 fl. oz. bottle (5% ABV) from hopdog. Thanks Steve! Rating #31 for this beer...

Poured gold with a bubbly white head. Aroma of fruit and hops. Good hops bite that mellowed with some fruit flavors. Some citrus in the finish.

Pours a hazy golden color, with a small white frothy head. Light spotty lacing. Aroma of light malt, some light hops, and a touch of citrus. Flavors of light esters, light herbal malt, and earthy flavors. Light beer, with no lingering aftertaste.

12oz bottle, courtesy of Schutzenliesel. Thanks, Tom! Pours a hazy golden color; fluffy, textured white head with good retention and patchy lacing. Light, grainy and grape-infused aroma; very soft. Medium mouthfeel, showing sugar and citrus upfront; some soft, tea-like grains at mid-palate; balanced and drinkable. Medium, sugar and grainy finish.

10-20% opacity. Golden yellow. Fresh, hoppy, yeast-forward nose, with some hay and soapy yeast notes. Flavor is lively, fresh, hay-like with heavy and assertive hops,. Some pilsner malts and some fresh hay-flavored hops. Nice.
