Commercial Description:
Scratch Beer 1 - 2007, a hybrid beer (California Common Beer), will be released on or about April 26. This is a beer we brewed on the back patio on more than one occasion. It became the inspiration for Tröegs Pale Ale. The simplest explanation of what makes a hybrid beer unique is the brewer is forcing a lager to do something it doesn’t want to do. Scratch 1 uses lager yeast fermented at a warmer temperature. The fermented malt gives an exaggerated fruity undertone to the beer which combines nicely with the citrus flavors of Cascade hops. Balancing out the taste are spicy, earthy flavors derived from Brewer’s Gold hops. Slightly aggressive hops in the front of the mouth give way to a clean, subtle grape-like finish.

Appearance: Pours a faintly hazy, light yellow body with a small white head. Smell: Scents of citrus, crumpled crackers, and wood. Taste: Brief sweet pale maltiness alongside a continuous, though sensibly subtle citrus taste. Finishes with a lingering, woody bitterness. Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Medium carbonation. Drinkability: A fine, little summertime beer. I feel richer for having tried it!

Bottle thanks to MrBendo: Pours a transparent pale golden with a thin, spotty-lacing white head. Aroma of fresh, wet, lightly citrusy hops and some mild pale malt sweetness along with light fruity esters. Body starts with a nice, light sweetness and fresh light flavor hoppy character toward a crisp, clean finish. Very drinkable and true to style.

12 oz bottle from Somed vis GandGKevin - thanks to both of you! Clear yellow gold with a pure white head. Lightly citrus nose, tangerine and light white grapefruit. Thick, white, clumpy lace. Dry citrusy flavors, a tad perfumey, traces of dried tropical fruits. Clean, dry, lightly citrus bitter finish. Pretty damn nice summer beer!

Bottle... Yellow lager with a small, creamy, white head. Spicy, white and black pepper nose. The balanced flavor yields pale grains, mild bitterness and light acidity along with a perfumey, lemon peel essence. Light to medium-bodied with fizzy carbonation. Finishes crisp and mostly clean. Not really a fan of this style, but thanks to mgumby10 for sharing the bottle!

Pours a slightly clear pilsneresque yellow with a milky thin head. Laces in wide open soapy patches. Aromas give a mild fruitiness to the nares. Clean and dry fragrance. Nothing lingers or is oily sweet. Flavors are not quite sharp as a tack, but still manage to maintain some crispness. Fruit tones loiter. Tastebuds tingle. Ample spicing appears with some nondescript ground powder of some sort: nutmeg? cinnamon? etc. Light and bubbly going down. Basis for their pale ale, I’m glad that they expanded upon this concept to arrive at their pale. This doesn’t compare to the tasty pale ale.
