Commercial Description:
Scratch Beer 1 - 2007, a hybrid beer (California Common Beer), will be released on or about April 26. This is a beer we brewed on the back patio on more than one occasion. It became the inspiration for Tröegs Pale Ale. The simplest explanation of what makes a hybrid beer unique is the brewer is forcing a lager to do something it doesn’t want to do. Scratch 1 uses lager yeast fermented at a warmer temperature. The fermented malt gives an exaggerated fruity undertone to the beer which combines nicely with the citrus flavors of Cascade hops. Balancing out the taste are spicy, earthy flavors derived from Brewer’s Gold hops. Slightly aggressive hops in the front of the mouth give way to a clean, subtle grape-like finish.

Pours gold with a large white lingering head. Smells of roses, earth, citrus, some strawberries, some hay and grass. Tastes of sweet citrus, touches of dry malt, some hints of grapefruit and blood oranges. Finishes dry. Very good session beer. I like that so many craft brewers are putting in the time to really attempt to nail down what a good every day beer should be capable of. Well done!

Obtained in BIF 30 from BA Wren, Tröegs Scratch Beer came in a plain labeled bottle, that indicated a bottling number of 1-2007. When poured, the beer looked clear pale, like a Pilsner, and had a three finger thick head. The aroma was mostly citric hoppy, and was very clean, with none of the diacetyl or sulfur hints common in Pilsner. The taste was a simple mix of sweet pale malt, and citric hops, with hops being the dominant taste. Very light and effervescent on the palette, yet there was enough body and a sour tang to keep from feeling watered down. Very drinkable little number.

Bottle. Pours a pale golden yellow body with nice head. Aroma is slightyl fruity, grainy, light citrus. Flavor is light and refreshing. Light citrus lingers on the palate with a subtle spice that hits the taste buds first and then backs down. This would make a nice session beer, if only it wasn’t a limited release.

12 oz bottle from Somed vis GandGKevin - thanks to both of you! Clear yellow gold with a pure white head. Lightly citrus nose, tangerine and light white grapefruit. Thick, white, clumpy lace. Dry citrusy flavors, a tad perfumey, traces of dried tropical fruits. Clean, dry, lightly citrus bitter finish. Pretty damn nice summer beer!

Pours a hazy bright yellow/gold with a nice pure white head, some lace. Aroma is very citrusy, and lemony, has an earthy doughy lager yeast component, yet some fruity esters as well. Flavor is crisp and doughy, good malt backbone with a nice earhty and citrusy flavor- more lemon in the end- cascade, but also reminds me of Sarachi ace, with its lemony character. Finsih is crisp and clean- very refreshing- good morning beer.

Poured a hazy golden color with a medium sized, white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of citrus fruits, floral hops, toffee, and light bread. Taste of more dough, citrus, pine, and light tartness, with a dry, woody, bitterness in the finish.
