This grand cru has been lovingly aged since late-February, yet still unleashes the slightest hint of alcohol heat.

Scratch #10-2008 also has a triple flavor inspiration combining the caramel/toffee notes of dememera sugar and molasses, with citrus and licorice flavors created by the orange peel and star anise; lastly we create a peppery/spicy finish with the same trappist yeast has been used in each Scratch Beer Triple.

Golden color with a medium head. Aroma is sweet and sugary. Flavor starts sweet and falls apart despite lots of spice and sugar. The point? This one just falls flat compared with Troegs other Scratch (and standard) offerings.

Pours hazy gold with nose of rock sugar, florals, Belgian spices, fruit. Tastes fruity, with bready malt, spicy dry florals, and some limey citrus. Rich palate with notable complexity and a nice balance of fruity, spicy, floral, and hoppy elements.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a lightly hazed pale gold, with a tall rim of white head. Aroma is a slightly biting alcohol, muddled spice and yeast phenol. Flavor develops similar profile, with a real grainy texture from the phenols that are rather harsh. Sweetness sticks some spice notes to the roof of my mouth. This beer is a bit confused. The high gravity and high sugars don’t make it particularly quaffable, but the grain and spice notes are decent. The yeast comes on a little too strong, even for this style. Not much hop presence. Finishes on those wax-like yeast phenols. Not my favorite tripel.

Pours a medium peach amber with a thinning white head fades to a film- little lace. Aroma is peppery, anise/licorice almost cardamon like, sweet and syrupy. Very sweet flavor- sgary, carramel syrup, toffee, fruity- pear and apricots, candi sugar-like, spicy peppery, citrus- orange rind and zest- and a sweet finish with some more orange in the aftertaste dna back of the throat. Too cloying especially for a tripel. Carbonation is low- not dry, wierd spiciness, and just off.

12oz bottle, from Capone’s (Norristown, PA). Pours medium amber, capped with a small white head. Aroma of spice, white pepper, citrus, and some candi sugar. Flavor is on the sweet side with candi sugar and honey, with a hefty dose of spice. Mouthfeel is thick and syrupy. Long, spicy finish, mainly anise. A bit heavy on the spice for me.

Growler from the Brewery. Pours a hazy, golden amber color with a small slightly off-white head that diminishes quickly but lasts throughout as a thin coating. Minimal lacing. Aroma is of cloves, anise, and bubble gum. Initial flavor is malty sweet with the spices of cloves and anise coming through. Finish is somewhat dry, warming and short. Medium bodied, soft carbonation.

Thanks Dr. Jay for saving me one of these little gems. Virtually no carbonation and light golden yellow with no head. Yet tasty for sure. Alcohol knocked me over for the rest of the aft, nice spiciness(clove, orange peel, bannana yeast, licorice, corriander), medium mouthfeel. No question that over time these bottles lost carbonation.

12oz. Bottle: Aroma of new vinyl (plastic), yeast, peaches, and spices. Pretty terrible scent. Poured orange/amber in color with a tiny, golden head that disappeared immediately. Cloudy. Full of tiny particles. Flavor is medium sweet. Tastes of honey, lavender, yeast, anise, and plastic. Medium body. Chalky texture. Soft to average carbonation. Sweet, fruity, spiced finish. By far the WORST in the Scratch series so far.
