lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA Mar 3, 2009 Bottle in trade from ogglethorp. Thanks Brian! Pours amber with a medium lived creamy beige head. Smell is toasted malt with some iced tea notes. Flavor is similar with iced tea and toasty, bready malt and light floral hops to it that provide a nice balance and solid bitterness. Medium body and carbonation. Pretty tasty and sessionable. noncaloric (601), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Jan 29, 2009 Updated: Mar 8, 2009Thanks ogglethorp! Gusher. After it settles down, pours a hazy copper with a dense, active beige head that never fully dies away. Plentiful lace. Pleasant malt aroma with a little peach hard candy in it. Flavor has a solid, slightly sweet malt backbone, with a pleasant fruitiness and a slightly off metallic edge. Very smooth mouthfeel with a lively effervescence in the mouth. I can’t help but wonder if I got an off bottle, but enjoyable nonetheless. cbkschubert (1945), Cochise Co., Arizona, USA Jan 26, 2009 12 oz. bottle via trade with goryshkewych - Pours a slightly hazy deep amber color with a one and a half finger thick off white head. Nice lacing. Has a pine and herbal hop aroma. Flavor is mostly hops with a little bit of malt hiding in the background and some light esters. Medium body. A nice beer. Thanks George. ucusty (1871), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA Jan 9, 2009 Thanks to fyrecracker for the bottle. Amber pour with a slight haze. Thin tan head and no lace. Piney aroma. Thin bodied. Nice bittersweet balance. A solid esb if there is such a thing. Cletus (5001), Connecticut, USA Jan 6, 2009 Pours copper with a thin tan head. Smells rosey and spicy. Tastes sweet and rosey with some sugary splashes and earthiness present on the finish. ROGUE (621), Newark, Delaware, USA Dec 26, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours a copper color with thin tan head that fades to a thin layer of foam. The aroma is a touch of hops atop a solid malt background that produces strong caramel aromas and a touch of fruit. The taste is very strong roasted malt up front, followed by a healthy dose of pine. A bit of sweetness can be detected after a few drinks. webjedi (249), Silver Spring, Maryland, USA Nov 29, 2008 Tasty, definitely a pretty good attempt at an American-style ESB. Proper slightly sweet malt and a good bite of hops. I think the EKG is the nice finish on it. (Fresh from Brewery - Growler 11/28/2008) GAManiac (1123), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Nov 20, 2008 Bottle courtesy of mymrnngjckt poured into a pint glass.
Pours a clearish tea-colored amber with a one inch off-white head that lingers for a while. The constant stream of bubbles from the bottom feed a swirl in the middle throughout.
Some earthy hops open up the aroma with some caramel malts and toasted grains in the background. There also seem to be some spices in the mix as well.
The taste has a bitter zing up front with a solid grain presence and some earthy hops. There is a slightly peppery and dry finish. All the flavors really meld together in this one - very nice.
The mouthfeel is medium bodied with tons of carbonation and very tingly throughout.
This is a great bitter and probably one of the better Scratch series brews as an example of its style. Very solid.
