Commercial Description:
Next up, we present Scratch Beer #11-2008, a Bitter. We used to brew a little number called Tröegs ESB. Even though this beer was retired almost six years ago, we still get numerous Tröegs old-schoolers begging for its return.

Well hang onto your boot straps because Scratch #11 is about as close as we can get to the original ESB without firing up the old brew kettle. The Scratch #11 recipe originates from Chris’ stint at England’s University of Sunderland brewing program. After returning to Colorado the brothers drew on Chris’ experience and brewed pilot batches tweaking that recipe. The ESB production recipe has direct bloodlines to these pilot batches.

12oz bottle. Pours a deep, clear, red-tea color; significant, creamy khaki head with solid retention and fine-bubbled lacing; a gorgeous pour. Good levels of caramel, mineral and earthy bitterness, and soft tea-like malts in the aroma; crisp with some nice biscuity notes. Medium, crisp mouthfeel: just perfect in the mouth: crisp, zesty bitterness (not anything rough: soft earthiness and mineral-driven hops) coupled to a solid malt core of crackers, tea, and bread; some red fruits and dried caramel at the edges; very beautifully composed beer, and just immensely drinkable stuff; very very impressed by this one. Lengthy finish: crackers, tea-like malts, some red fruits and lingering breadiness; ends crisp and on the dry side.

Bottle: pours a dark copper color with a thin white head, aroma has some hops and citrus, taste is slightly bitter and a little buttery, fairly thin mouthfeel, with just a little bit of a bitter finish.

Pours copper, with a white head. Aroma is hops, malt, and some fruit...maybe peaches. Flavor is hops, malt, caramel, and fruit. A nice one, and fairly sedate, for the scratch series.

on tap-pours a light tan head with bubbles and copper/brown color. Aroma is northwest hops, some medium malt. Taste is medium malt, northwest and English hops, which makes this a lost effort to my taste and finishes thin. OK carbonation.

Bottle sampled with Mad_Indian. Pours Copper with a small off-white head. Aroma of caramel malts, citrus, slight fruit, and floral hops. The flavor has some slight sweetness to it, slight fruit, caramel, and floral bitterness in the finish. Slight thin body, decent brew.

Bottle. Pours deep coppery colored with 1-finger off-white head. Nose is fruity hops, caramel malt, perfumy rosey florals, mild berries. Tastes hoppy, piney, with floral, berry, honeydew, and spicy notes. Not bad, but not among my favorite scratches.
