Commercial Description:
Next up, we present Scratch Beer #11-2008, a Bitter. We used to brew a little number called Tröegs ESB. Even though this beer was retired almost six years ago, we still get numerous Tröegs old-schoolers begging for its return.

Well hang onto your boot straps because Scratch #11 is about as close as we can get to the original ESB without firing up the old brew kettle. The Scratch #11 recipe originates from Chris’ stint at England’s University of Sunderland brewing program. After returning to Colorado the brothers drew on Chris’ experience and brewed pilot batches tweaking that recipe. The ESB production recipe has direct bloodlines to these pilot batches.

Clear rust; Medium head; Nose of sharp malt. Good malt to start, but otherwise, unexceptional.

At the Brick in DC. Not exactly earthy, quite hoppy, but wait! It’s niely balanced! Seems to depart from a more mild English traditional version. Very creamy, even in the bottle. Would love this on tap.

cask conditioned via gravity: Too tired to type anything in, just a wicked good beer.

Cask version @ the Philly Real Ale Rendezvous VIII: Cloudy light amber color with a quickly disappearing head. Very smooth toffee-like taste with aroma and palate sensations touching mildly on the citrus fruits.

Dark brown-orange. No head. Citrus, grapefruit and some toffee in the nose. Buttery flavor with toffee and grapefruit rind. Moderate bitterness which is too low for an ESB I think.

Rocky loose head over rust colored body. Lots of hops in the nose--citrus and pine. The body is light. Fruit-driven malt lasting for a terribly long time, sweeping toward a long, bitter finish. First rate ESB. Fresh, fruity and snappy and terribly appealing. This brewery really impresses me.

Good ESB. Nothing special, but good.
