checkmatei1 (629), Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 2, 2009 Bottle: Poured an dark orange amber with a nice amount of head. The aroma was malty, caramel, and toffee. The flavor was malty, caramel, and the dark chocolate bitterness without the chocolate part. Overall, a very interesting beer with great flavor. Beerlando (2284), Orlando, Florida, USA Oct 23, 2009 Bottle, courtesy mcbackus. Pours a rusty caramel brown hue, lightly hazy, with a thin bubbly, film of khaki colored foam at the head. Some thin sheeting shows on the glass, with little spots of lace. The aroma shows a malty base of caramel, toffee, and fig, with hints of toasted grain and a weird note of smoked tea. Flavors follow suit, cara-toffee driven with some light cocoa notes and dark fruit, mostly sweet but with a touch of earthy bitterness on the back end. The palate is medium bodied and smooth, but finishing a little dry. Solid brew, but not mind blowing. mgumby10 (1844), Jupiter, Florida, USA Oct 22, 2009 Courtesy mcbackus. Pours a caramel brown with a small off white head. Smells of toffee, caramle, and hops. Kind of musty though which wasnt a good sign to me. The flavor was also kind of blah. The hops were kind of drowned out in this beer, and it just didnt seem to crisp to me. Wasnt horrible of offensive, just not for me I dont hink. dchmela (1406), Orlando, Florida, USA Oct 19, 2009 Tasted at Otown Throwdown courtesy McBackus. Big caramel colored pour. Toffee malt aroma. Tatse is malty toffee and a little bitterness. Just ok. SoLan (1369), Orlando, Florida, USA Oct 18, 2009 Courtesy mcbackus. Dark amber, off white carbonation. Toasty caramel and toffee, pumpernickle, mild butterscotch. A bit of earthy bitterness to balance. Decent. noncaloric (602), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Oct 8, 2009 Thanks to machfive55. Distinctive, penetrating pine hops aroma with caramel in the background. Pours clear dark brown with a thinnish beige head, temporary spots of lace. Flavor has a definite hops bitterness; the malts have a slightly oxidized, resinous tea flavor with some smoke and toffee. The yeast comes somewhere between soy sauce and vegemite. It’s not off by any means but strikes my palate as odd. Altogether kind of a mashup, a neat experiment. Medium bodied with a warm, penetrating alcohol element. Interesting beer, at first you don’t pick up on the warming sensation, but by mid to lower pint...the warmth pops out a bit in the cheeks.
Looking at it as a tasty beer, it shines right through in that respect. Highly quaffable, QUITE easy to drink. Could be partly the age on it. I’d drink this again if I could.
Pretty neat concept of Troegs going back to the homebrewing beginnings of making it up as you go along.
