Commercial Description:
Scratch #16-2008 combines the bitterness of two aroma hops, the lush sweetness of honey and malt and an earthly yeast taste creating a Winter Warmer designed to ward off the coldest days. The dark, rich amber color comes from a combination of molasses and crystal malts; the Thames Valley brings a distinct earthly flavor; white the blend of hops creates fruity (Amarillo) and piney (Cluster) bitterness. The Winter Warmer ends with a slight warming sensation from the elevated alcohol content. Enjoy this one throughout the winter months.

I discovered Troeg’s Scratch 4( now Flying Muffdiver), so I don’t want to catch any crap over this review. Anyhow, it pours brown with off-white head. Nose is caramel malt, hops, mild funk, and mild peppery florals. Tastes malty, hoppy, soapy, woth some pine, rock sugar, and vegetal flavors. Earthy and a bit odd at the finish. John and Chris, please stop this madness and make Scratch 4 year round!

Bottle at EBF- they told me it was their winter warmer strong ale. Ugh- pretty damn bad. Pours a dull brownish with a thinning head. Aroma is light fusels and strange esters- lightly fruity and lots of herbal almost vegetal dms. Flavor is nutty, and lightly sweet with a slickness, ok caramel, weird fruitiness grassy and herbal with tons more dms. This was one of the worst scratch beers I have had.

This one was pretty damn nasty. Simply put this one smelt and tasted like vegtables. Yuck.

Clear brown pour with an orange tint. Thing light tan head. Very bubbly. Yeasty aroma with molasses and brown sugar notes. Very dry and bitter. Hops with a bit of molasses. Bitter finish. Not bad. A little weak.

Bottle at ’Cole’s Rare Beer Fest’, Buffalo, NY. Pours a clear amber-brown with a small diminishing off-white head. Mild malty aroma, a bit toasty, along with light pine hops. Flavour, also mild, is malty along with light hops, some alcohol and a hint of spices. Starts earthy and finishes dry. Medium to full bodied. Good, not great.

12oz bottle, from Capone’s (Norristown, PA). Pours deep orange brown, capped wit a moderate sized khaki head. Aroma of fruit, toffee, caramel, smoke, and earthy hops. Flavor is on the earthy side, with toffee, peat, smoke, earthy hops, and pine nuts. Grapefruity hop finish.

Sweet malty, light caramel nose. Sparkling reddish amber in color with very little head. Light caramel, some choco, amarillo tangerines and some cobwebs from the yeast. Medium bodied with some tangy fruit at the finish. I rather like it. Thanks to the crew at BOTW!

I was rather disappointed by this round of Scratch. Bland nose, not much flavor, and too much hop bitterness for the style. Only flavor is biscuit, maybe a bit of nuts. I guess they can’t all be zingers.
