Commercial Description:
Scratch #16-2008 combines the bitterness of two aroma hops, the lush sweetness of honey and malt and an earthly yeast taste creating a Winter Warmer designed to ward off the coldest days. The dark, rich amber color comes from a combination of molasses and crystal malts; the Thames Valley brings a distinct earthly flavor; white the blend of hops creates fruity (Amarillo) and piney (Cluster) bitterness. The Winter Warmer ends with a slight warming sensation from the elevated alcohol content. Enjoy this one throughout the winter months.

Courtesy mcbackus. Pours a caramel brown with a small off white head. Smells of toffee, caramle, and hops. Kind of musty though which wasnt a good sign to me. The flavor was also kind of blah. The hops were kind of drowned out in this beer, and it just didnt seem to crisp to me. Wasnt horrible of offensive, just not for me I dont hink.

Thanks to Rich for the bottle! Poured ruddy, medium brown with a short-ish cap of beige head.. clear with a cool color in the light. The aroma picked up sweet toffee, sourdough bread, and increasing molasses topped by earthy and herbal hoppage.. lots of rich sweetness stood out and was almost candy-like. The flavor was very much centered around the molasses, with a little toffee and cereal down there as well.. bitterness was light and earthy, likely degraded from where it began.. candied molasses and maple syrup on the warm, lightly spicy finish (picked up a little nutmeg and cardamom). Medium-bodied at most on the palate.. tasty and intriguing components in here, but it didn’t flow all that well.

12 oz. bottle I believe from ThEpeeist. Thanks, Chris! Pours a dark ruby copper, just faintly hazed, with a bit tannish head that laces a bit, dies down significantly. Aromas are caramel and toffee malts, stale biscuits and digestive crackers (think cereal grains), very light florals, honey crisp sweetness. Initial is malty, caramel and some light raisin. a bit soapy and light bitterness. Cereal, grainy, a touch of fruity yeastiness along with floral hops with a touch of spice on the back of the palate. This beer is ok, not a style I love, but certainly drinkable and nothing that is overbearing in booziness.. a bit of cardboard, a bit of almost maple syrup. Interesting.

Bottle, courtesy mcbackus. Pours a dark caramel brown color with a thin, bubbly tan head. The aroma shows notes of toffee and caramel as the malt base to go with some fark fruit and hops. The flavor follows with the toffee and caramel malts up front followed by some dark fruits and a touch of faint earthy hops in the back. Medium bodied with balanced carbonation and fairly smooth going down with a dry finish. Not bad, but nothing too exciting.

Bottle: Poured an dark orange amber with a nice amount of head. The aroma was malty, caramel, and toffee. The flavor was malty, caramel, and the dark chocolate bitterness without the chocolate part. Overall, a very interesting beer with great flavor.

Bottle, courtesy mcbackus. Pours a rusty caramel brown hue, lightly hazy, with a thin bubbly, film of khaki colored foam at the head. Some thin sheeting shows on the glass, with little spots of lace. The aroma shows a malty base of caramel, toffee, and fig, with hints of toasted grain and a weird note of smoked tea. Flavors follow suit, cara-toffee driven with some light cocoa notes and dark fruit, mostly sweet but with a touch of earthy bitterness on the back end. The palate is medium bodied and smooth, but finishing a little dry. Solid brew, but not mind blowing.
