Commercial Description:
Consider Scratch #19; originally designed as an enhanced take on Scratch #15 with a slightly higher ABV, our brewers went to town to deliver a brew slightly more akin to our fabled Scratch #5, the Imperial Oatmeal Stout brewed for The Flying Mouflan Experience. For Scratch #19, we teamed up with St. Thomas Roasters of Linglestown to create a special blend of espresso beans. They added Kenyan beans to the mix because of a strong citrus flavor that compliments the hops. Creating en environment akin a French press, the beans are combined with whole flower hops in the hopback, and the hot wort passes through the vessel on the way to fermentation giving Scratch #19 a lush coffee espresso nose and hints of coffee flavor. There is a silky quality to the mouthfeel and a citrus hop finsh coming from the Kenyan beans and hops.

Aroma was huge on Coffee, with some roast and malty sweetness. Poured jet black with large tan head. good lacing. Flavor was cold coffee, smoother than Scratch 15, but less astringent and in my opinion less punchy. slight citrus hop in background. viscous palate with a little bit of carbonic prickle. An alright impy.

handbottle. medium sized tan head on a black body. nose is mild malted milk ball candies, toast, light petroleum/plastic notes, maybe some sort of vanilla ice cream but to be honest it seems very stale, dried, and old, as strange as that sounds for something like ice cream. silky texture, medium body. parched milk chocolate and roast up front, more petroleum and plastic in the finish, along with the faintest bit of heat. tastes like whoppers candy - malted milk balls + stale chocolate. nice texture, smooth carbonation, but unfortunately there’s little to get excited about flavor-wise. stale milk and soured licorice are the major flaws.

[BCTC 09] Poured an opaque black color, with a medium sized, tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of burnt wood, roasted malts, strong coffee, vanilla bean, and a bit of coffee. Taste of more strong coffee, roasted malts, light smoke, dark chocolate, and light alcohol in the finish. Thanks John!

Bottle @ the Cuvee de Castleton release. Was thoroughly unimpressed with this beer. Perhaps should have been served colder, may give this another chance in the future.
