Commercial Description:
Enjoy this as a token of our appreciation. With the demise of Tröegs Oatmeal Stout, this long-forgotten recipe serves as an inspiration and a heartfelt thanks to our faithful stout fans.

What’s special here? We start with a seductive malty sweetness, combine it with hints of chocolate and roasted flavors and round out the texture and taste with a healthy helping of oats. A three-hop blend brings perfect balance to the sweet malt adding a dry finish to this big beer.

12 oz bottle. Pours a mostly opaque dark brown body with a little ruby on the edges. Fizzy and foamy one finger light brown head. Lots of heavy lacing. The nose is chocolaty and roasty with some hints of licorice and a touch of coffee. The flavor is fairly dry with lots of roasted malt, though there’s a bit of ashiness also. This almost comes across as more of a Porter to me. Minimal alcohol apparency. The body is just a bit too thin for my tastes with too much fizzy prickly carbonation. Overall, this was OK, but it really didn’t measure up against any of my favorite Imperial Stouts. I had higher hopes for this one.

12oz bottle. Poured a dark brown color with a large sized tan head. Aromas of chocolate, pine, roast, and vanilla. Tastes of chocolate, vanilla, pine, roast, and a trace of caramel. Thinner for an Imperial Stout. Alcohol content well hidden. Lacing left on the glass.

Bottle from JB175. Thanks Jason! Pours a dark brown, definitely not black, with a small tan head that fades leaving a decent amount of lace. aroma of chocolate, nuts, piney hops, vanilla, and roasted malts. Mouthfeel is very thin for an impy and the flavor leaves notes of chocolate, more hops, caramel, and roast. Definitely leaves something to be desired.

Sampled @ OTTD 3. Pours a very dark chestnut color, light off-white soapy head. Aroma is nutty and slightly alcoholic at first, then a mild roastiness comes in later. Heavy chocolatel/alcohol to start, mild roasy finish. Pretty mild and plain for an imperial stout.

Bottle. Pours a nice black body with thin head. Aroma is roast, coffee, cocoa, light smoke. Flavor is bitter, coffee, charcoal, sweet malt, and lightly hoppy. Creamy body and mouthfeel. Finished really dry but overall very balanced.

Sampled during Manhattan Blind IS Tasting: Not that much of a body. Much lighter than I expected. Pretty nice flavors of caramel and fruits.

Bottle from Bendo and served in my Stone IRS snifter: Near opaque with a lovely creamy tan head and very good lace. The aroma has notes of oats, chocolate, and black malts, hints of wood and smoke, herbal and grassy hops, and some allspice. The taste starts malty sweet with heavy milk chocolate and light vanilla overtones supported by burnt and sugary notes. There is a layer of piney and grassy hops in midsection as well. Nutty and earthy about the finish. The mouth feel is lively (perhaps too carbonated) and a touch too thin for the flavor profile but it is still easy to drink for the style. Well not a huge Impy it is still a nice brew, an Imperial Oatmeal Stout as such. Think Olde School when approaching this.

Dark red brown color with a large, tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of vanilla, roasted malts, oatmeal, brown sugar, chocolate, light fruit, piny hops. Taste of roasted malts, anise, chocolate, pine, and vanilla. Bitter, hoppy, alcoholic finish. Creamy, but thin.
