Commercial Description:
The Flying Mouflan was #4 in the "Scratch Beer Series" begun by John and Chris Trogner and their brewing staff in 2007, producing one-offs based on recipes the brothers developed in the mid-’90s when they were considering opening a brewpub rather than a production brewery. The medal-win in Denver last October convinced the brothers to make the barleywine-style ale the first beer to come out of the Scratch program and be added to the production roster.

Smells of sweet clementine and pine with the alcohol punch coming at the end. Flavor is a study of malt/hop balance. Taste like citrus rum cake, with orange peel being the dominant citrus here. The malt is present all the way through bringing a cake-like doughyness to the whole thing. There is a buttery presence throughout as well. Maybe a little too hot at the finish. Great slick mouthfeel that fills in all the crevices. Great Brew. Thanks Troegs. 2009 22oz.

Original Scratch 4-2007, 12 oz. bottle. Pours cloudy amber brown with a lot of small floaters and a decent tan head that subsides to a ring that leaves some spotty lace. Aroma is oaky and woody with dark fruits and citrus hops. Flavor is hop dominated with still lots of citrus character. The woody, bourbony vibe comes through as well, along with some sweet fruity malts in the background, somewhat overshadowed by the other, more prominent flavors. Medium-full bodied and smooth with a bitter hoppy finish. Some alcohol presence in both the nose and palate. Good and unique hop-forward barleywine. Surprised the hops held up so well after 2+ years of aging and that the alcohol is still noticeable.

The Dan Journal #277. Tasted 7/29/09. 22oz bomber. Clear second pour with a dark amber hue. Thick ring of cream colored head. Rich malty aromas with a pleasant roasted quality. Slightly sweet with a good hop note. Full bodied with mildly doughy malts. Toasty and sweet initial flaovrs. Good dose of alcohol. Caramel and fudge in the malt bill. Mild red esters. Soapy hops in the finish. Dry and mildly lingering. This is how I like my Barley Wines!

Bottle. Pours a brownish color with a creamy light tan head. Aroma of caramel, citrus fruits, toffee and has a hint of chocolate. Flavor was sweet with crewy malts, toffee, caramel sweetness, pine and a bit of chocolate with soft carbonation and finishes bitter and hoppy.

Brought to the worlds smallest tasting by my BA buddy Mike. This was definitely a pleasant suprise. Dark brown , off white head, with the haziest of lace. Nose was vanilla and brandy. Very mellow and smooth. Taste is lightly sharp, hoppy, and malty. Caramel hints.

650 ml bottle shared by mike of BA at lagunitasfan’s mini tasting. Thanks Mike, and thanks Tim for hosting. Poured a hazy dark copper with a fair cream colored head that had good retention. The aroma was strong with perfumy floral elements set in a toffee backdrop. The taste featured more of the same floral perfume that dominated the nose, also present; brown sugar, toffee, caramel and hoppy biter almonds. The mouthfeel was silky smooth with lively carbonation. The finish was long and biter. Overall: If we divide the barleywines into subcategories of; hoppy, fruity, perfume/floral, and caramel/toffee, the perfumy ones are my least favorite. So this rating is a struggle in objectivity. I acknowledge it is a good beer, but I probably wont be drinking it again, just not my style.

(bottle ( 22oz ). shared by blankboy at October 2009 WaterlooWeekend. Cloudy brick-red, decent frothy off-white head. Mild toasty malt, moderate alcohol, leafy, light resin hop bitterness, dry and not sweet at all. Taste follows - very leafy and dry, oddly sweet, stronger alcohol - quite delicate, very light dry hoppiness. Light body, a bit astringent, pleasant, somewhat citrusy finish - quite nice.

Hops and sugary malt aroma. The flavor of hops dominates, which I really enjoy in this style. Pours a dark, murky amber with hints of orange. The head is small and short-lived, quickly leaving a collar and traces of lacing
