I enjoyed Scratch 4 upon its initial release, but lost my notes. Most recent sample is a 22oz bottle of Flying Mouflan. Pours reddish amber, capped with a moderate sized tan head. Nicely balanced aroma, the earthy hops are definitely the focus, but caramel malt provides a nice backdrop. Sweet caramel hits the palate first, with a bit of citrus and tropical fruit, then the earthy hops take over. Long, moderately bitter finish, with hop resins sticking to the palate. Great effort from Troegs.

22 oz shared from afire, thanks Waylo- Poured into small lidded glass stein, a dark amber orange/brown with simmered foam off white head. Flavorful earthy hop goodness with grains and subdued sweet malts. A mellowed sweetness that keeps you interested with a bit of hop notes that arouses your senses and a nod to the 9.3%... lovely barley wine/ale, I love PA breweries and hats off to Troegs, excellent!

22oz bottle from goldtwins, thanks Larry. Dark brown with an orange hue. Sweet dark fruits and spices, lots of rich maltiness, great aroma. Flavor is dominated by hop bitterness, a little too much actually, would like it a little more mellow, this could be great after a year or so. Once the hop fade and the taste resembles the aroma, it will be the shit.

bottle. Pours a really deep, dark mahogany color, dark amber highlights, with a suprisingly big inch and a half of light tan head that sticks around like crazy. Aromas of light nutty malts, flowery and spicy hop notes, Little if any booze on the nose. Flavor starts with some light peppery spice, follows with some booze and smooth toasted malt sweetness. Some citrus in the background. Definitely a sharp hop bite that blends with the evident booze. Palate shows that booze in a light lingering hot sharpness, full flavor and a clean finish. Very good hoppy american barleywine.

Sample as a bonus at the Unibroue tasting at Blacklick Wine and Spirits on 4.10.09. Deep amber color with a medium tan head. Malty aroma with a ton of citrusy and earthy hops mixed in. Very hoppy flavor with some malt and then more hop with a touch of booze in the finish. Dare I say hoppier than Bigfoot?

(bottle - 22 oz) Deep ruby color with a fluffy tan head. Aroma is sweet with a good amount of juicy hops, citrus, candy, and spice. Flavor begins with sweetness and citrus mixed with some floral hops. Middle is very sweet and slightly spicy as well with a nice warming and bittersweet finish. Chewy and very easy to drink.

22oz. "Flying Mouflan". Pour is deep ruby red/brown with a tan lacy head. Aromas of gummy bears, sweet potato, and more candy. Flavor is carmel, gummy bears, citrus, piney hops, and a nice smooth finish. This thing is insanly drinkable and full bodied. No alcohol present at all. Amazing brew here!

Bottle purchased at Rozi’s in Lakewood. I normally would pass something like this up... Except thats in a 22.oz bottle, 9.3% barley wine and is brewed in Pennsylvania. Oh yeah, and by Troegs, that’s not too bad to put on the ol resume. Anyhow, this is a darn pretty beer. Dark brown with a hint or rad in it, with a thin cream foam head on top. The aroma is out of this world. Through my stuffy nose the balance of floral citrus notes and strong dark fruity malt thickness. The hops are so nicely represented in the aroma, and then it is balanced perfectly with the semi roasted malt scent and this beautiful fruitiness. Did that sentence make sense? Regardless, that is how impressed I am with this beer. Its knocked me off my seat. It is flavored just as well, smooth and malty. Sweet and bitter. Viscous and fan-fucking-tastic. It warms up to you with a top notch fruity malt complex. It isn’t overloaded with anything, not too chewy from the malt, not too fruity at all, and not too hoppy. Those things are all in a near-perfect balance, and it is brought up a small level with a slightly roasted/smokey flavor at the end. If this beer was barrel aged, I would probably defecate in my pants in excitement.
