Appearance was a big bold brown with some orange hues. The head was white to off-white peachy, leaving behind good lacing. The aroma was rich full citrus hops, tangerines, oranges, grapefruits, full bodied caramel and chocolate too. The flavor followed suite, a really well balanced, but darned hoppy bwine, featuring everything I love about Troegs amber. The mouthfeel was balanced, full malts, not quite sticky, with a huge hop bite. Great stuff Troegs, and I must thank myself for buying this one. YUM! lordeche (397), Quincy, Massachusetts, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 12, 2009 Pours dark mahogany-brown with tan head. Great citrusy nose balanced with a touch of chocolately malt. Flavor is extremely well balanced, with bright citrus and herbal hops sitting perfectly on a backbone of caramel, chocolate, cola, and biscuity malts. This beer doesnt fit into any one specific genre, and its great to see breweries continually reinventing certain styles. Palate isnt outrageously sticky, which is a definite plus. | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Apr 12, 2009 Aroma is a wonderful scent of ruby red grapefruits, with a touch of caramel coming out after the initial surge. Pours a clear, dark red, with just a dusting of head. Slick mouthfeel, touch of biscuit malts, and low carbonation. This beer starts with caramel notes, blending into pine and grapefruit, with a long bitter finish. The alcohol is amazingly well hidden. Quite a tasty beer, and one I want to grab some to lay down and see how it is in a year or two. fredandboboflo (1417), East Setauket, New York, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Apr 12, 2009 Aroma of citrus and pine hops with big caramel malt and a distinct, odd sort of sweet aroma, really sweet fruit or yogurt or something... Flavor also had some very sweet dessert notes, maybe in the area of praline, in addition to more of the nice hopping and more expected rich caramel malt. There was also an odd side to the flavor with some meaty notes for me as well. This beer was kind of all over the place for me, even the praline notes seemed out of place somehow, though pleasant in its own right. A lot of good stuff, and nothing terribly bad-tasting, but left me more confused than anything. LilBeerDoctor (1526), East Setauket, New York, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Apr 11, 2009 Bottle. Pours a murky brown with no head. Aroma of sweet caramel malt and hop oils. Also some sweetness which smells like watermelon Trident gum. Flavor of rich malty goodness, crackery malt, some old socks. Very tasty! A little different from your typical barely wine, but it’s interesting. A little heavy in the palate though.

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 11, 2009 Color of black tea with a warm-toned creamy head. Mostly brown sugar and well-caramelized malt in the aroma. Flavor is relatively sweet but balanced with notes of scalded fruit and hop bitterness. This is a very nice, elegant barley wine.

| 4.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Apr 10, 2009 Glad to be the first Québécois to rate, maybe even try that one. Outside Pennsylvania, it seems hard to find; the owner got it out of the backstore because my brother was buying 250$ worth of beer to bring to me, The owner asked him not to tell where he got it and not to come again to get some more). 9,99$ for 22 oz. This is Heaven in a bottle. Hop tingling, very light texture, high carbonation, there seems to be something watery but in the best possible way (maybe it was very fresh), notes of fruits like orange and surely others because it is an incredibly complex brew. Notes of sweetness from the malt but the fruity hops come over and over again in the taste and aftertaste. I am totally overwhelmed by that brew. I’d buy cases of that if I could find it. A new Graal!
