Commercial Description:
The Flying Mouflan was #4 in the "Scratch Beer Series" begun by John and Chris Trogner and their brewing staff in 2007, producing one-offs based on recipes the brothers developed in the mid-’90s when they were considering opening a brewpub rather than a production brewery. The medal-win in Denver last October convinced the brothers to make the barleywine-style ale the first beer to come out of the Scratch program and be added to the production roster.

Bomber thanks to machfive55. Pours a deep mahogany color with a small chestnut color head. The aroma is super hoppy; sweet grapefruit and berries. The flavor is similar; sweet citrus hops, medium to high bitterness, a smaller malt profile. A lot like a double IPA for sure. Light sweet caramel malts provide some balance. A nice medium mouthfeel. Overall, a tasty brew.

22oz Bottle purchased at Zeno’s Bottle Shop - State College. Dank Double-IPA like aroma flows from the snifter, rich with a careful blend of grapefruit zest, fir needles, and juniper. There’s a deeper edge of caramel and sweetness that adds nice depth. Pours a real rich red-brown, with a wonderful lacing head in sepia. Flavor is subtler than I expect. A soft, hop-flavor forward ruby red grapefruit juice, some apple skin, and some sandalwood. Higher, electric-lime hops waver above. There’s a lot of breadth and length to the hop flavors, but I feel like the malts aren’t returning the flavor. And the bitterness doesn’t punch so hard. This has got to be the softest, most silky barleywine I’ve ever had, with alcohol so well-integrated you’d think you were having a session beer. For the color of the beer, the weight, and the style, I expect more chewiness from the malt. But, I almost prefer this, with a fun dance between very fresh, expressive hop flavor and an airy, silken quality to the body. Deftly done.

07 Bottle from when this was a Scratch beer, thanks to tpd975. Pours reddish-brown with an off-white head. Nose is citrus and floral hops with caramel, and sweet malt. Flavor is tons of sweet malt with balanced floral hops. Enjoyable beer.

22oz Bottle. Oozed out of the bottle a beautiful turbid earthy garnet, with amber highlights and a soft creamy tan head that provided remarkable uber lacing. Wonderfully redolent of high alpha hops: pine needles, grapefruit, orange; then caramel-chocolate, raisin, and fig with hints of roast malt. Reminiscent of Nugget Nectar with an intense malting. Tasted spectacular. Fresh pine needles, pink grapefruit, orange - perhaps mandarin - then caramel, cocoa, raisin, fig, slight licorice-toffee spiciness. It’s palate exacerbates the jubilance of the experience. Viscous and soft, full but not heavy, bitter but not cloying, intense but simple, warming but not burning. Amazing. So close to perfection.

Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark red-brown color with a very large orange-tan head. The aroma was very strong piney and grapefruity hops with a fruit cocktail element throughout. The flavor was wonderfully rich and strong with notes of pine, fruit cocktail, pink grapefruit, sugar, cocoa and lightly roasty malts. The finish was long with resiny hops. The mouthfeel was thick and full. Almost perfect.

Poured amber with a off white head. Aroma of fruit, caramel, and pine. Thick with lots going on. Fruit and spice mix with caramel and citrus in the finish. Delightful.

20090402 Bomber from RB Spirits. Dark ruby amber color with small beige head that lingers. Aroma is fruity with apple notes, fig, and light grapefruit. Some light pine and solvent. Light body for a barley wine, but pleasantly coating and mild, fine eff. Quickly fading pithy bitterness to finish. The flavor is a bit sweet, a bit hot, with applesauce, raisin, honey, grapefruit, toasty grain, late cocoa hints. Fine beer but not blowing my mind or anything. Some mild plasticy phenols emerge with temp on nose and retronasally. I’m curious as to how it will age, but don’t have high hopes as I’m afraid those phenols will become more prominent and the body will thin too much.

sweet and hoppy aroma.... great hop and pine flavor with a malt balance... Similar to the Southern Tier Backburner but much more hop power.... great unique barleywine
