Commercial Description:
The Flying Mouflan was #4 in the "Scratch Beer Series" begun by John and Chris Trogner and their brewing staff in 2007, producing one-offs based on recipes the brothers developed in the mid-’90s when they were considering opening a brewpub rather than a production brewery. The medal-win in Denver last October convinced the brothers to make the barleywine-style ale the first beer to come out of the Scratch program and be added to the production roster.

Bomber - pours a cloudy dark red, with a soapy head - this is a tasty british style barleywine with an american twist - the aroma has some american hoppiness to it, with some raisin and fig in the mix, peppery alcohol - low carbonation, with a creamy mouthfeel - the flavor starts with some earthy hops, but the complex fruity notes (plum, date, fig, raisin) and toffee-ish sweetness you’d expect from the british style come forward - ends with some alcohol and some drier notes of sherry and even a little bit of peat - this is a very solid barleywine - I must buy more.

22 oz bomber from Spirits RB. Pours a deep dark brown with some light orange/brown edges and a large frothy beige head with some serious staying and lace power. Aroma isn’t that complex with pineapple hops and some chocoalte malts in the mix. Flavor picks up where the aroma falls flat with lots of citrus hops, chocolate, toffee, caramel, apple, grain, raisins, and lots more all over a medium bodied fully carbonated barley wine. This is one solid brew that I really enjoyed even after drinking ALL DAY!!!! LIFE IS GOOD!!!!

could a beer look much better? brown orange and red hues and just a touch cloudy and with a thin yet substantive light brown head. fully hopped but much more grapefruit candy with a fine malt backbone the beer smells like it will taste and tastes even better. a real fruit flavor all its own with great sweetness, addicting, with no trace of the abv....i am not worthy!

22 oz bottle-pours a rich light brown head that laces and dark red color with brown tint. Aroma is sweet pine, dark fruit, medium malt-caramel. Taste is sweet pine/resin hops with some bite, dark fruit-plum, cherry, medium malt-caramel, peat/roasty, some spice-pepper. Thanks jwc215 for picking this out.

22 oz. Thought this was an ASA, but I guess it could be considered an american barleywine. Deep amber in color with a small to medium off white head. Aroma of a nice amount of fresh citrus hops- some grapefruit, orange, caramel, toasted malts, and some light fruit. Taste is hoppy with a good deal of citrus, grapefruit- light, sweet tropical fruit, a good caramel backbone with some brown sugar sweetness- nice body, the bitterness is initially light but continues to build through the finish. A nice one from Troegs.

Bomber from Steve, thanks man!! My impressions of this are fading as I’m rating it from memory. Some really nice things going on, but it’s really on the hoppy side for a barleywine. Actually reminded me of Nugget Nectar with a heavier, fruitier malt presence. Good, but I think this one needs to sit for a year.

Good effort from troegs. Nice citric/herbaceous hops, some caramel sweetness, a bit of berry like fruitiness toward the finish, and a pleasant bite.

22oz bottle pours deep garnet in color with a head that quickly fades to a ring. Big citrus hop aroma with some sweetness. Simcoe tasting hop slight bitterness with a slight tartness. Caramel is the largest component of the sweetness. Very goo. Will Sit on the second bottle for a while and see what happens.
