Commercial Description:
The Flying Mouflan was #4 in the "Scratch Beer Series" begun by John and Chris Trogner and their brewing staff in 2007, producing one-offs based on recipes the brothers developed in the mid-’90s when they were considering opening a brewpub rather than a production brewery. The medal-win in Denver last October convinced the brothers to make the barleywine-style ale the first beer to come out of the Scratch program and be added to the production roster.

(Bottle) Pours a dark amber-brown body with a small beige head. Aroma of dark bread, caramel, light pineapple, and grapefruit. Flavor of dates, figs, brown sugar, raisins, chocolate, toffee, citrusy hops, and caramel malt. Excellent!

Thanks whoever sent me this. Pours a very murky ruddy brownish. One finger tan head. Nice malty aroma, sweet, light citrusy hops, grapefruit peel, caramel, a little aged. Nice caramel, sweet, grapefruit peel flavor, waxy mouthfeel, not overpowering, well hidden alcohol. Very nice BW.

The color was a cloudy clay color. The aroma was sweet, hoppy, dark fruit, and alcohol. The flavor was aged, dark fruit, sweet, alcohol and malty. The palate was full-bodied. The finish was warm.

Courtesy of mj. Beautiful dark mahogany with a high beige head. Hoppy piney nose with caramel and dark fruits. Flavor is also heavily hopped with notes of pine, tropical fruits, dark toffee, grapefruit, big woodiness. Pleasantly sweet, smooth bitterness/resinousness. Full to medium bodied with a smooth texture and subtle carbonation. Very good!

12 oz bottle. Pours a dark amber body with a tight bubbled creamy beige head that retained as a thin covering. The nose is big caramel malt with a nice accent of resiny hops. The flavor is really well balanced with heavy caramel malt and a nice resiny hoppiness that cuts the sweetness really well. Great lingering burnt caramel finish. Mouthfeel is great, full and soft with zero stickiness and perfect soft carbonation. Clearly the best of the Scratch beers to date that I’ve had. This was just so well balanced and easy drinking. Should have gotten a case of this.

Bottle from The Epeeist on 2/22/08. Thanks Chris. I’ve been looking forward to trying this beer. Smooth creamy tan microfoam head lingering 5mm thick on the surface. A sight to behold. Pours thick dark amber color. Aroma with some oxidation. Hops have mellowed from aging. Leans sweet. Nice treat.7,5,7,3,16 Rerate. Bottle from trade at bottle shop: 8,3,8,4,17

Hazy light brown body with a medium tan head. The nose is sweet and vinous with toffee, raisins, spicy/herbal hops. The flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter with toffee, brown sugar, prunes, pine and flowers. Medium/full body is soft with light carbonation. Nice.

Poured amber with a fluffy off white head. Aroma of fruit, candy, and hops. Lots of hops and sweet malt flavors. Some fruit in the finish. Really good.
