Commercial Description:
The Flying Mouflan was #4 in the "Scratch Beer Series" begun by John and Chris Trogner and their brewing staff in 2007, producing one-offs based on recipes the brothers developed in the mid-’90s when they were considering opening a brewpub rather than a production brewery. The medal-win in Denver last October convinced the brothers to make the barleywine-style ale the first beer to come out of the Scratch program and be added to the production roster.

22oz from Capone’s. Dark orange to light brown pour, with a modest head. Thick body and lasting retention. Pretty nice nose, with sharp nut and malt notes, but a barrel full o’ hops to pull this one halfway between English and American-style BW. Initial taste is a bit underwhelming, and the body seems thinnish, but as the beer warms up its depth emerges a bit. Nicely dry and woody finish, with the hops that introduce the beer settling in nicely with fruity malts to create a pretty balanced beer.

Sweet caramel malt aroma with some nice red fruit as well. Flavor is prune and nice bready chewy malts. Finish is pretty sweet and slightly bitter. The sweetness sticks with you for a while. Some citrus peel hop texture and bitterness. This one is pretty complex and one of the better versions of these guys that I’ve had in a while.

Sweet barleywine. Lots of malts in this one. Fruit tones. Bit of a butt kicker at this point in the evening.

22oz bottle pours a translucent, slightly watery, nut brown with a creamy slightly off white head. Aroma reminded me of Nugget Nectar, sweet, candy, oranges, grapefruits. The flavor isn’t as hoppy as I thought. The strong malts, sweet caramel, sweet dough and crackers are first and foremost, with the oranges and slight pine at the end. Finish is sweet and slightly chewy. I wonder how this will age, we’ll find out.

Deep amber brown beer with a lot of haze. The aroma is pretty solid. Big spicy/earthy hop nose with a lot of orange peel and herbal notes as well. Dark chewy malts with a bit of crackery/bready malts. Orange peel and a sweet but restrained maltiness. The hops seem to be fading a bit allowing a bready matliness to come to the fore. Sort of a light rummy spiciness as well. It’s lightly vineous, but also quite restrained. Light stone fruit on the back. It’s pretty tasty really.

I think this may have been from the bottle I gave to Aliza at the Cuvee de Castleton release at Captain Lawrence. Pours a nice brown with a thin white/beige head. Sweet and spicy with some nice caramel tones. Malty and more caramel. Finishes with a light bitterness. Tasty.

12 oz bottle. I guess this is almost 2 years old now. Murky brown with a creamy tan coating. Nose is chocolate caramel, cider and dusty wood. Medium body with a tang. Taste is toffee and apple, briefly sweet before bitter greens and citrus peel kick in. Seems like this has lost something in the cellar. Will have to try a Mouflan.

Clear dark brown with a smallish tan head. Sweet malty aroma. Caramel sweetness with some hop bitterness in the back ground. Smooth, balanced.
