Commercial Description:
The Flying Mouflan was #4 in the "Scratch Beer Series" begun by John and Chris Trogner and their brewing staff in 2007, producing one-offs based on recipes the brothers developed in the mid-’90s when they were considering opening a brewpub rather than a production brewery. The medal-win in Denver last October convinced the brothers to make the barleywine-style ale the first beer to come out of the Scratch program and be added to the production roster.

22 oz. bottle from Grape & Gourmet. Cola-like dark pour with an off-white head. Aroma of grassy and grapefruit hops. Some caramel sweetness detected as well. No surprises in the taste from the aroma but the hops are a bit too grassy tasting to make this beer exceptional. Very good, however.

Bottle. Pours dark amber with a beige head. Hoppy aroma with floral notes and citrus fruits, as well as some malty hints. The flavor is well balanced, with a floral, lightly citric hop profile, and toffee sweet malt in the background. Nice bitter hoppy finish.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with an average, fizzy, light brown head, somewhat lasting with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (caramel, nutty, bread), heavy hop (pine, perfume), average yeast (dough) with notes of dates, port, oak, vanilla, and pear. Full bodied, sticky texture, average carbonation, and a bitter finish. Long duration, heavy sweetness and acidity, moderate bitterness.

Bottle at the Nashville BA Tasting. Pours a dark ruby amber with an off white head. Aroma of sugary malts and fruity ale esters. Flavor of caramel and tea countered by a leafy hop bitterness. Finish is dry and yeasty. Good stuff

Bottle: The aroma consists has lots of tropical fruit and citrus notes. There’s also some mild grapefruit and the slightest hint of chocolate. It pours a cloudy brownish-orange with a small soapy off-white head. The flavor starts with very mild fruit and citrus notes along with some caramel. The finish has light-moderate citrus hoppiness. Medium bodied with mild carbonation.
