Commercial Description:
The Flying Mouflan was #4 in the "Scratch Beer Series" begun by John and Chris Trogner and their brewing staff in 2007, producing one-offs based on recipes the brothers developed in the mid-’90s when they were considering opening a brewpub rather than a production brewery. The medal-win in Denver last October convinced the brothers to make the barleywine-style ale the first beer to come out of the Scratch program and be added to the production roster.

2009 Bottle tasted alongside the Scratch 4 Version - Amber, with a larger off white head...aroma is fruity and hop floral, with some caramel malt and heat...flavour is similar, and fairly hop forward, but works well with the malt and alcohol...basically, the FM was very tasty, and the Scratch 4 tasted like it used to be tasty, but started to wane a bit, slightly oxidized and lacking a bitterness to balance...

It’s hot and I’m sweating but this is still great. Took a swig and put it back in the fridge, had a lawn mower beer, shower and then came back for this. Wonderful aroma of sweet malt. Pour is dark brown with a creamy head. Taste is more malt with a big hop kick. Finish is sharp and clean. Good stuff.

bomber from grape & gourmet. pours a very dark, slightly hazy amber with a thin, off-white head and great lacing. aroma is fantastic with huge citrus and fresh floral hop notes with hints of candied strawberry and peach, sweet toffee, roasty malt, and a bit of spicy rum. flavor is excellent as well with citrusy, bitter hops, fresh fruit notes of apple, pear, and berry, and a great balance of sweet, caramel malts and candied sugar. mouthfeel is medium bodied, slightly sticky, with a great bittersweet finish. overall, one of the most unique and delicious barley wines out there.

This beer pours a dark amber color with a reddish-brownish hue with a huge beige head. The head is soft and creamy and leaves lots of lacing around the glass. The aroma is extremely inviting, with notes of flowery hops, pine, citrus and yeast. The flavors are amazingly and dangerously delicious, with a big hoppy character and a balanced malty profile. This beer is more like an IIPA than a barleywine. It’s extremely hoppy, bitter and dry with a big malty balance. The Flying Mouflan is so well-rounded, with a great bitter hoppiness with grass, grapefruit, orange and grassy flavors along with a rich tone of earth, caramel and toffee. The finish is quite hoppy and dry but with a delicious and complex malty tone. This beer really has it all. It’s delicious, flavorful, rich, complex and completely and outstandingly enjoyable.

Poured dark brown with an oddly yellow head with long retention and nice lacing. Smells big on C hops Tastes strongly of citris, hops, nice roasty flavor, reminiscent of carafa malt.

22oz bottle. Wow, an amazing BW!!. Pours deep brown with a beige head that left tremendous lacing on the tulip. Tons of citrus and piny hops on the nose as well as caramel, toffee and roasted malts. Flavor held great hop bitterness with sweet caramel, toffee and candied tree fruits to bring everything together, brilliant!

22oz bottle from RCL, again big thanks for sending this wantlist beer....pours a dark garnet reddish brown with a thin film of barely off-white.... aroma of equal balance of sweeter caramel/toffee malt and an equal degree of a citrus-like hop.... a barleywine that has a nice degree of hop sensability. focus on sweeter caramel malts upfront and the hops quickly move in with a citrus-like punch.
