Pours dark – burnt orange when held up to bright light – with a small, creamy, khaki head. Decent retention. The nose is mostly grapefruit and pine, however, digging deeper, I came across plenty of brown sugar, caramel and toffee. Medium to full-bodied with tickling carbonation. Leans way toward the bitter side of balance – roasty, caramel sweetness overwhelmed by more-than-adequate, citrusy, earthy bitterness. Lengthy bittersweet (more bitter than sweet) finish. | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 15, 2009 Bottle: pours dark ruby red with a thin tan head, hoppy and fruity aroma, taste of caramel, hops, toffee, malt, medium thickness in the mouthfeel, very smooth finish with a nice warming feeling in the throat. Definitely one of the best barley wines I’ve ever had. shigadeyo (2263), Harrison, Ohio, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 13, 2009 Updated: Jun 2, 2009 Dubbed the Flying Mouflan, this alluring ale is like "puching our Nugget Nectar off the side of a cliff" tastes like hops dipped in candied sugar and rolled in dark chocolate nibs. Patient beer lovers who cellar the Mouflan will be rewarded with mellowed hops and luscious malt.
5/13/2009: Holy crap! Tröegs Flying Mouflan Ale is awesome! This deep amber-brown brew has a thick, lasting deep ivory-colored head and is packed with lots of hops and malts. The hoppy aroma has candied pineapple, tangerine, and grapefruit along with a rich, sticky caramel maltiness that is hiding in the background. The mouthfeel is moderately thick and heavy and delivers a smooth, rich, and complex flavor of a wonderful hop/malt blend. Citrusy hops (bitter orange, resin) and bitterness dominate, but the underlying caramelized maltiness is fairly large itself and can’t be overcome that easily. It is sticky and has notes of darker, even slightly roasty/chocolate notes. It finishes dry leaving the tastebuds begging for more. I am so glad that I decided to try this beer fresh, but I really need to hunt down another so that I can age it for a year or two. It is great now, but I bet it would be simply awesome with a little more age...

Body is cloudy, though not opaque. Aroma is classic fresh floral and strawberry, similar though not as robust as Nugget Nectar. Palate is full and juicy, and lands on tongue softly to stay. Flavor starts with strawberry, citrus, and caramel blended. Finish moves towards a note of toffee sweetness, complemented by milk chocolate and a hint of hop/alcohol bitterness. A very flavorful and balanced offering, fun to drink. d0ggnate (4), California, USA does not count | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 12, 2009 What the hell is a Flying Mouflan? I don’t know, but I like it.
A: Pours a velvet amber/brown/almost purple color with a puffed up two finger head layer that leaves patch lace around my glass.
S: Grape notes. Hops mixed with malt beautifully.
T: Subdued and bitter hops. Strong malt flavors, too. This beer really reminds me of a table wine. As this beer warms, almost a chocolate/cocoa flavor emerges.
M: Mouth coating flavor with a thinner body. The hops aren’t overwhelming here.
D: Pretty good stuff. Not my favorite in the style, but a welcomed treat from the East Coast. BeerGestapo (740), Windsor, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 10, 2009 Brewed in the USA...... Pours a reddish brown color with a thin dissipating beige head. Aroma of pine needles, malts, spices and dark fruit. Taste of strong hops with some spices, caramel, pepper and sweet malts. The mouthfeel is medium in body with a lingering hoppy flavor that finishes sweet. Overall, pretty interesting barleywine from the Troegs brothers. Goodgrief (1153), Middletown, Delaware, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | May 8, 2009 Pour was a beautiful cherry wood brown with a finger and a half worth of head with some decent lacing. Strong malty aroma. The flavor, similar to its brethren, contains a rather large citrus presence which packs a bitter wallop to balance the loads of caramel malt. Iif you like the Amber and the Nugget Nectar and dig barleywines, you can’t miss this one!
